So for the last week and a half, my downloads has been fairly slow in comparison to similar files i have downloaded. I may only have a 1Mbps line but I was fairly happy with the speeds I was getting. Depending on what I download, I use kat for torrents and more frequently nzbmatrix for movies.
For the movies I use Grabit to download, but recently it has been giving me very slow speeds, which was fine weeks ago when I would let the download run during the day to which the decrease in speed was acceptable. Now, even at midnight it would run at 25kbps.

So my question for you fundi's is fairly simple. WTF???
I did a speed test on here
Download Speed: 1019 kbps (127.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 402 kbps (50.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 107 ms

I really don't know if that is fine???Help, im a newbie.
And according to Telkom my line is 100%.Might the upgrade of lines have anything to do with it because I have not decided whether I will stick with the current or upgrade to the next.

Exchanges are overloaded. i wouldnt moan tho ur upload is 200% above what they allow.. even after iv moaned at them 10 faults.. they always say 256k up is to high for 2meg....

Sharkie, what news server are you using?

I'm getting high latencies the past week or so - after Telkom upgraded the 384kbps users to 1Mbps, however my download speeds across MWEB, AstraWeb and xsusenet max out my 2Mbps ADSL line pretty much every time I download.

I think this telkom upgrade was a terrible mistake. Sure it's a win for the 384kbps users, but whats the use if our already congested and overloaded exchanges can't handle the traffic? In retrospect, this is no achievement for South African broadband. They should have made sure our infrastructure can handle this "step forward" which clearly it cannot.

Then they want to come with their 20 meg and 40 meg lines, when realistically, very few of us can hardly reach 4 meg.

Sharkie:
NZBmatrix isn't a news server. Instead it is an indexing site.

News servers are like:
MWEB's news server, Astraweb, Giganews, xsusenet, etc.

If you're just using MWEB's news server for movies, then you can expect it to be slow!

Yes get a decent news server if you do not already. It's worth the extra bucks...

I'm on Mweb 1mbit and loving the 512k upload. The upload was the biggest issue for me on 384k. 512k is perfect for hosting a game for about 3+ friends and using Teamspeak at the same time. Certain games I couldn't even play on a server with my 384k and use Teamspeak as the ping would spike to 200's. I hope they never drop the upload speed.

As for downloading, It's always full speed on cached usenet content and on international torrents (private) it's always above 90kb/sec so I'm very very happy with Mweb.

Oh and on Telkom's game servers I get 11 - 15 ping. Just Awesome.

I use News Demon and get better results than Astraweb, try them each for a month and see. They both $10 i think.

+ News Demon support is great, Astraweb dont reply at all lol

400kbs Newsdemon Average
280kps Astraweb Average

I am in the same boat, I used to be able download 24/7, but now I am only able to download between 7 and 7. Used to push 3gigs a day on a 384 line, but for about 2 weeks now only getting 2.5gigs a day.

Thinking of going Astraweb, but I am afraid that will have the same issue.
