I have one of these MWEB Specials that convert a plains POTS phone to VOIP via a converter attached to my Billion 7402G Router/Modem. The Router has the firewall enabled and I cannot use the MWEB Voip thing. To use it I must disable the firewall and then it works OK. Does anyone know which port I should enable to use the VOIP Converter throught the Firewall?

Failing that you could always just set the converter's IP as the routers DMZ.

Converters IP is set remotely by MWEB so don't think I can change that.
Well without being able to fix the IP you're never going to be able to forward a port to it.

Suggested Port 8080 but not which protocol.
8080? That's going to mess up a few things as it's a popular alternative to 80.
dude your first mistake is mweb :)

your second is not installing skype :)
Quoted for truth.

EDIT - did it come with a telephone number that people can call you from a landline or cellphone - or hasn't that oversight been corrected yet?

Do I need to know the IP to forward the port? All I really want to do is tell my Firewall that it must allow this device access to Internet. I have the Mac address and can input that. I'm new at this stuff and don't really understand it hence the dumb questions

I'm thinking you do.

Who makes the unit?

Unit produced by Sipura. They were issued free by MWEB plus telephone. You have to register and then it gets configured over Internet, Works fine if I turn Hard Firewall off, but not when I turn it on. Can dial any number but only other Mweb members using service can dial me. Service is called Broadband Talk.

Thanks for that info, I must of missed it. It sounds terribly confusing but will give it a shot, otherwise will just have to disable firewall when using phone. I have Windows Firewall and Zone Alarm running. Thanks again

Your problem is that the Billion 'High' firewall setting blocks all but the most popular protocols in both an inbound & outbound direction. This is restricting VoIP (SIP) from working as it requires certain ports to be allowed outbound (e.g. SIP, udp 5060 & STUN udp 3478).

BTW you shouldn't need any port forwarding if the adapter is configured correctly, STUN will open the required listening ports on your router automatically.

Thanks for advice. Router Firewall is set to Medium. i Changed following

Rule Name mei.dns Protocol UDP to allow inbound on ports 0 - 65535 and it now seems to work. Will this leave me vulnerable?

Will this leave me vulnerable?
Not really, you're only allowing outbound not inbound. Worst that can happen is you get a virus via say email, and it starts replicating itself (if it used udp) to others using up your bw & cap  With the outbound ports blocked it wouldn't get out.
