MWEB prices look ridiculous!!!

They're just stupid, like most corporates... *sigh*
 
Problem is many uninformed people will go with a big name like Mweb. "They must be good, it's Mweb" I am pretty happy with my "inferior" 30GB for R198.99 though. ;)
 
Most people are not aware of anything but MWEB.

MWEB have a massive userbase, about 80% of whom have the MWEB page as their default one.

Most of these users, if quizzed, would assume that the MWEB page is the internet or is the start page of the internet - no kidding.

This country is seriously backwards when it comes to computers and the internet, not just for the obvious reasons of economics and education, but also for your average computer user - they are CLUELESS, completely clueless.

Most of them won't even know :-

1. Exactly what ADSL is
2. What a gig is
3. What the exact difference between 192 and 512 is



MWEB will win on this, you know why ?

Market share and market penetration - they have the marketing budget to take out full colour full page advertising in magazines and newspapers.

Axxess and the like don't.

To put it in a nutshell, MWEB are corporates - they will KNOWINGLY overcharge if they are sure they can get away with it.

The moment they see their bottom line being noticably affected by the smaller fry, they will adjust their pricing and ramp up the marketing a notch - simple and effective.

If I was to tell you, for instance, that you can buy Jewellery of better quality than the usual shops at the mall, for 40% less, would you know where ?

Most people wouldn't.

I use this analogy because I have a client who manufacturers and sells jewellery for 40% less - it's the same concept as Axxess or Web Africa.

Yep Axxess rely mostly on MyADSL and I think word of mouth. If Axxess and Webafrica were to have TV ads many people would not go for them because they would say something like "Must be a scam. How can they be that much cheaper than Mweb?"
 
I happened to see a newspaper ad in the Cape Times for Axxess advertising their new prices!

Well done Axxess for getting to a larger client base than MyADSL, although I would agree most users are from MyADSL.
 
The interesting thing is that their profit margin is probably less than Axxess because of their marketing overheads, however, the sheer bulk of their sales is what counts.

To bring it down to it's base level, the customers end up paying for the marketing :D

It's all very slick and very well planned and a complete and utter rip off, but hey, that's what the larger percentage of business does - rip people off.
 
thing is we can't actually go after them as we do with telkom, because unlike the fixed-line market, with ISP's competition actually exists to a degree. as much as i despise mweb for ripping me off the past year after acquiring my old isp, i have to give them credit where its due. they won a large market share based on marketing.

i think that if other isp's offer a little bit of mwebs content (albeit useless content), they might be able to win over alot of the very unknowing subscribers that mweb targets. advertising doesn't always necessarily have to be through television though, since most people who can only afford sabc's R200 odd per year, cant afford an internet connection in this country. i think maybe in the short-term, adverts in certain well-read magazines may not be as expensive as tv
 
There was a 'MWeb sucks' type thread the other day that went on for a few pages. I was surprised it sank to the bottom of the forum page so quickly as I would of thought more people out there would be biatching, as the are a big isp.
Dump them, cause they are ripping you off, and tell them to shove their online goodies while your at it. They will try and use that top justify the rip off.
 
The reason MWEB doesn't get a great deal of mileage here is that most people "in the know" wouldn't touch them with a 10ft pole.

MWEB won't give a damn about this thread or any other like it, they have a huge customer base and if people want to pay those exorbitant prices without first doing research, it's their indaba.

Of course, let everyone you know understand that MWEB is a massive rip off - I do - maybe that will make a small dent, but as I we all know, many people are reluctant to change even if the obvious is staring them in the face.

One thing that ISP's hold people "to ransom with", is their email addresses.

People are comfortable changing their normal addresses - PO.BOX, telephone, fax, business address - it's part and parcel of everyday life, but for some reason, when it comes to technology, their brains freeze.

"oooh, I can't move ISP because I'll loose my email address and nobody will be able to get in touch with me !"

Crazy isn't it ?

But it's a fact that people are more comfortable moving their entire office than their bloody email ! :D
 
Mmm - nows theres an idea ...

I keep trying to get my mom to move over to a [email protected] before I finally get her to get adsl - but she won't, everyone uses it and its on the business cards.

But - if there was a free and reliable redirect service ......
 
bb_mat that is very true about people not wanting to give up an e-mail address.

Anyways, I cancelled one Mweb account recently and they actually offered me a free month. I still cancelled though. Maybe all Mweb users should threaten to leave and claim their free month :p
 
you can still use mweb to access your emails for around R70 per month using another connection. that's what they told me when i switched isp's. i dont care though cos i want nothing to do with them, rather use an entirely new email address - all i took was to forward one email to all the contacts in my address book informing them of the new email. problem sorted
 
bb_matt is right. I might be wrong but older people are more difficult to convert. Take my dad he lives in Kimberley makes **** loads of money(which I never seem to see btw) and is still using dialup. He spends almost R1000+ on his internet account and I have tried to convert him to adsl believe you me...explaining how he can be on the net 24/7, pay a fixed amount of $, get that latest Roy Orbison music vid much quicker but to no avail. He believes in dialup MWEB as his Isp and I will never get him to change his mind :D
 
mmm, I also HATE mweb, I've ended up with one of their accounts since their buyout of tiscali and while i diddnt really love tiscali they were 99^9999999 times better than this ****!!

we are with them because my dad gets it through his work i dont know if
they bought in bulk doubt it though but we got 3 gig cap one for
R329 , ??? why when you can get 30gig for R350. They justify there tarrifs
because of all they offer , lets see what is that encatata , hmmm isnt
that what the internt is?
 
I am with Global>Worldonline>Tiscali>Mweb - the change hasn't done much, all seems the same - but one/if i get adsl i will prob go for access
 
forgot im making my own account with web africa on that speacail 200 for
30 gig , i know this is a bit off topic but dos anyone know what saol are
like?
