MWEB Promotion

It is a promotion (aka Rand a Gig). :)

Terms & conditions apply: Price includes VAT. Promotion is exclusive to sign up online. Promotion only applies to Data Only Capped ADSL. New customers only. Promotion excludes free router.

One of the reasons I left.

The 200GB + 200GB is a "promotion", available to new customers only. If you cause a stink like I did, they will allow you to upgrade to this package (I was on 100GB+100GB, for which I was paying R400)

Lucky you. I'm constantly getting the "only for new customers".

I think I hear Vox Telecom calling...

And then return? :p

No, was recently at a friends house. He had an Mweb line, I wanted to get a 60MB torrent at about 2pm. It only finished at about 9pm. No one else was using the line.

Mweb just completely alienated me with its customer service, lack of regard for current customers (all special deals are only for new signups) and costs above all other ISPs (more than R2/gig for the standard accounts when looking at the FUP and yet you still cannot download torrents).

EDIT: I like that they finally updated their site, before it was atrocious. Afrihost/WebAfrica/CrystalWeb still have a better layout when it comes to packages, a slider is a lot better/neater/overview friendly than what Mweb is doing.

I complained and threatened, until I got what I wanted. I would have left MWEB otherwise. As a 15-year client of MWEB, why would I pay twice the rate (per GB) now offered to new clients? I cannot understand anybody remaining with MWEB on this basis.

It's true that torrents on MWEB during the day/early evening are hopeless, but I only stream. And MWEB has always performed. I left once and returned after a month:)

In which cases? Serious question. If you're a downloader or torrenter during hours? Then yes, I agree.

I have an uncapped 6 Mbps line and only ever use about 60GB on average per month. The one time, ever, I download more than 150GB over TWO months I get throttled to speeds where a 144p video will buffer every 5 seconds! I think not.

I first thought, okay I guess I abused my usage a little bit, and decided to go capped. Looking at the Rand per Gig promotion I thought it was perfect for me. It meant faster speeds and more data for only R40 more than I am spending now. Then I get screwed by MWEB because it's only for new customers.

Fair enough, everybody wants to attract new customers. Then I checked the normal capped accounts. For 150GB per month to pay R2.66 per gig is unacceptable. Hell I can get 150GB per month for R1.44 per gig and UNLIMITED downloads between 12am to 6am with Vox Telecom and their data rolls over!

No aspect of MWEB is appealing to me anymore. It's sad that they don't seem to care about their existing customers. It's sad that they impose unrealistic thresholds on supposed uncapped accounts. It's sad that they have such grossly overpriced services. But what's more sad is that it took me 5 years to realize it.

I don't understand this new customer thing.... so should I leave and come back? doesn't make sense

If you really want the deal... Then yes.

Or you can make a huge fuss and maybe they will just give it to you.

As an existing customer, you are expected to pay twice the rate asked of a new customer. There is no logic in that. So it seems they want you to leave.

So I phoned Mweb and this what the guy in accounts/sales told me:

I can have both accounts simultaneously but it will take one calendar month to cancel the current contract. So if I applied for the deal today then at the beginning of december I'll pay R500

+/- R100 (for the capped account for the last half of November) + R200 (uncapped account in December) + R200 (capped account in December)

At the beginning of January the cost is just R200 for the capped account. I'd really like to be able to just swap accounts and I think the complexity of it is pretty contrived, but I think it's better than outright denying existing customers the package.

So at the end of November if the deal is still on then I'll probably sign up. It'll be R400 for December but that's basically the cost for a premium 2Mbps which throttles you after 200 gigs where here you get 175 gigs + 100 gigs of night time data before getting throttled.
