MWEB speed reports

Seems to be severe bottleneck (300ms latency) between MWeb and Telkom, affecting all local sites this evening (not international).

Edit: Youtube is cached locally, but is currently slower than it would be if hosted internationally, since the local cache is on the IS network, and has to go through the Telkom bottleneck...

Very few local sites are not affected by this Telkom route. Those going through JINX, where MWeb has direct peering, currently have 30ms latency (from CT).

Terrible torrent speeds here too, at least Afrihost uncapped you can get full speed on torrents anytime after hours for the first 50Gb, and actually this is worse than the Afrihost speeds past 50GB too. Might just change back, even browsing seems slower.

When are the floodgates usually opened? By 10pm the network can't be that useless that you can only get 50Kb on 3 torrents each capable of maxing your line on their own?

Heh, and with that amazing 50Kb in the background I can't even nearly stream a Youtube video. What the ***** are they shaping my torrents for then? I hope this is a bad day for them..

Me too, our area had some downtime but that was telkom again...

Stop using public trackers! 400kb/s on private myself.

Well I don't download or care enough to upload all day so that I can remain on a private tracker, plus you obviously have to be invited or go looking for them first, and finally they won't have as much content/seeds as the public trackers. I'm often looking for older movies and series which will only have seeds on public trackers.

In any case public trackers have no problem getting to 400Kb if the line isn't being shaped to death, Afrihost was fine.

4mbps line here. Last 3 days torrents maxing out at 50kb. this is absolute crap.

hahaha I wouldnt be surprised if this is because of their DSTV on demand offering. Now they shape the hell outta every1, including the 4mbs users so that DSTV on demand subscribers have priority... Typical, I am too experiencing 50KB/s speeds here on my 4mb line.

The latency is an issue on Telkom's side, started just this evening, in fact international latency is better than local at present. Seems Telkom has a serious congestion problem, clearly been pocketing the installation and line fees instead of upgrading and maintaining their network.

This seems like a great time to come up with conspiracy (or screwup) theories. FIFA is doing another 2010 inspection at Soccer City, so maybe Telkom allocated all their 'Next Generation Network' (TM) to FIFA, and all the rest are on the old steam-engine version. Lame, but all I can think of...

Edit: Does anyone else notice the irony that MWeb's Network Notices Page isn't hosted on their new network, and that it currently takes 250ms to access the page (via Telkom!)

Does anyone know whether the latency problem is being attended to?

Phoned Telkom to refresh my port and I'm back to normal latencies now. \o/
