Woke up this morning and the Internet wasn't working giving me DNS not found/working error on both local and international servers...

I tried my mweb uncapped and my Telkom Internet account both giving the same error again.
I tried both with googles DNS server and got the same error again...

What could possibly wrong?

Hi

Please provide me with your MWEB account details and I'll look into it.

Have you perhaps tried 1 of the tools like: Malware check: http://dns-ok.us/ in the post which kilobits provided?

Here's the problem, I can't even get to that page to check, it won't display any pages at all.
(I'm posting on mtn 3G)

Yeah - that page would only have worked before the DNS shutdown. You need to check your router for a static DNS config as well as your PC.

I have been having random DNS failures for 2 days now. Just switched to Google DNS servers and and is happy again.

Unfortunately I'm unable to check the site as I have no connection at all, I did however, run the Avila and kaspersky tools which remove the DNS virus and both returned a negative to being infected...
PM sent.

I checked the router, for the past 6 months it's been working fine on automatically retrieving DNS server from ISP only today has it stopped so I switched it to manual and tried the free one provided by google (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) to no avail... :(

Start -> run -> cmd

nslookup www.google.co.za
nslookup www.google.co.za 8.8.8.8

Post results

Nslookup www.google.co.za
DNS request timed out.
Timeout was 2 seconds.
Server: unknown
Address: 192.168.0.1

Same for the nslookup www.google.co.za 8.8.8.8 and I tried nslookup www.google.co.za 8.8.4.4 all giving the same results..

unfortunately I have no connectivity at all, just complete inability to display any websites

I ran tracerts and pings to local and international websites which failed
And I checked to see that my line is syncing ( which it is at full speed)

I'm lost...

Let's take a step back.

Can you ping 8.8.8.8 ?

If you can't then its not just DNS but rather your whole line that's down. Have you checked the status page on your router? What does it report?

As per ambo above, basics....

Modem/router: Is your ADSL light on?

Check that all cables are properly connected.

Try to loan a modem to test for faulty modem/router.

isn't this due to dnschanger

Ran the Avira tool, told me I had no dns changer on my system and the DNS settings haven't been modified.

Edit: stupid iPad autocorrections everything to DNA xD

I'm getting host unreachable what does this mean for me?

Checked the cables... Reseated them and all the lights are green except the Internet one, line is syncing at full speed only thing left to check is for a faulty router.

Your system can't see any route to the destination IP address to route traffic

Start -> run -> cmd
Tracert 8.8.8.8
Post result

How are you connecting to these ADSL accounts?

No Internet light? Try logging on with the Telkom guest account (in your modem settings) and see if you can access the telkom.co.za web site:

Username: guest@telkomadsl
Password: guest

I'm not home ATM the moments but it's your basic setup, will post results when I'm back
Pc with adapter >> router >> line (tried wired/wireless)

What your saying is a problem with the line? Router? Or account?

Any of the above, details provided are insufficient to say which yet

I actually tried this late last night to no avail...

I'm just not sure where all this is pointing me to, I think it's narrowed down to either the line or the router

Ok I did the tracert, it returned from my router 192.168.0.1 and then was unable to continue because the servers were unreachable

Aha,now we are getting somewhere
Log into the router and check the status page,is it showing a connection?

By connection do you mean is the router syncing with the line? Because the line is synced at full speed
