Mweb/ Vodacom 3G Free McAfee

I have a Vodacom 3G account through Mweb Business. Mweb offer free McAfee Total Protection for all members (I have never used or registered for this to date). I have recently purchased a new HP PC with a trial version of McAfee Total Protection. I think it works well for my needs.

Do i have to uninstall the trial and then download the full program from Mweb to get the full program or can I somehow obtain the registration details from Mweb and just upgrade my Trial to the full version?

To do it the long way seems a waste of my 3G megabytes.

Any ideas would be appreciated:D
 
You have to uninstall and re-install. There is no key provided with the M-Web McAfee program. It is all self-contained.
 
You should realise that McAfee (like other AV solutions) will download between 1-2MB of updates per day. So at least 30MB per month. You should budget for that.

BTW MWEB offers free Wifi - 5h. Take your laptop to one such location and DL the
thing there.

Thanks, I've been using the Wi-Fi at Mugg and Bean for about 2 years but the AV is for my desktop machine :-(

The monthly traffic is cool I'm worried about the initial download. I only have a 1gig cap (most used for remote access to work resources) so I ration my downloads.
 
Why not just go with the free AVG? After the initial download the daily updates are absolutely minimal (around 100 to 200Kb most days) unlike some of the big commercial products, especially Norton which can easily chugg out 5MB or more for a definitions update. And for average use AVG Free is just as effective as its more bloated paid rivals.
 
I've used AVG Free Edition for many years (I think i was still on dial up when I first used it) and it is a great product.

Basically the commercial products are more comprehensive and I figure, if i can get it free... why not?
 
Well I decided to download it anyway and the good thing is it was only about 70Mb. Way less that I expected. It installed without a hitch and seems to work well.
 
I found little difference between the Free M-web McAfee and the Free AVG... they both came up with a LOT of false positives. :(

Almost ANY game trainers or cracks or keygens. They are usually just deleted without even giving you the option to check them out first or google them. They are just listed as GENERIC.MALWARE. Which is BS. I know what they are and what they are used for. WinPCap which is used to capture streams through your network adapter is flagged because it is "sniffing" software. HTTrack which captures web pages is also listed as malware. The game trainers are flagged because they often use a keyhook. The AutoPatcher Update Engine APUP.exe is flagged as a Trojan by McAfee when there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Etc. you get my drift. Many of the DLL files are flagged because they contain know vulnerabilities. But a vulnerability is not a virus.... and it is usually patched by the Vendor reasonable quickly.
