Mxit itself is a problem, but if you really have to and are advantages enough to have an FNB account you can use their connect software to chat to your mxiteers. Alternatively and you will have to test as its stopped working for me is add you contacts on GTalk using [email protected] following that format.
Worked great for me for a time then the last remaining mxit contact got a berry and installed v6 on it and i can see her online randomly really but she cannot see me nor receives any of my messages.
BY randomly i mean i have mxit on pidgin so even while she is online on mxit the gtalk 1 will go offline and sometimes come back other times not, but ya since the advent of whatsapp i have run out of mxit contacts.

Maybe it's time for a change but I got a question about Whatsapp let say I have Whatsapp and a friend also got Whatsapp.If I have his number in my phonebook but he doesn't have my number will I show up on his Whatsapp?

NO, but you can still message him/her. WHatsapp builds your contact list exclusively from your phonebook you cannot add contacts to whatsapp manually, you need to create a phonebook entry. You can however still block contacts.
If you have their number you can message them and continue a conversation until they actually delete/end that conversation removing it from their conversation list, they will have to wait for you to message them or add you to their phone book before they can message you again. Same applies if they have your number and you don't have theirs.
