my 4meg line is now 640kbps

i just logged out of my digichilli and onto afrihost expecting some full speed download action but was dissapointed to see that my speeds were rather low. Now i just checked my router and it tells me that my adsl downstream speed is just 640kbps upstream is still the normal speed for a 4mb line of 512kbps. has anyone else experienced something like this before. Im going to call telkom in the morning.. just wish i could fix it now.

I have had that problem, the line drops then it resyncs at at lower speed eg 1870 instead of 2048. All I need to do is pull the telephone cable out and it resyncs at the correct speed.

Re-sync with the exchange and see if it changes.

I called telkom and they reset some port on the exchange or something. seems to be fine now.. next time il try pulling the cable.

Yeah, that is pretty darn weak from them to make 640kbps an acceptable downstream rate for a 4Mbps line!
I recently had my friend's line resync'd from 640kbps to 512kbps, since I thought that the wrong synchronization speed caused the intermittent connectivity problems
Simply pulling your cable won't change the synchronization rates, unless your line attenuation & noise margins are too low for the maximum allowed rates.
Telkom has to reset it on their side...

Play around with your ADSL Modulation... set the router to one save restart. repeat, until you find a good steady sync speed. This is because telkom have upgraded to ADSL2+ and most routers are using that modulation. you need to get it to sync on the old ADSL1 modulation, i can't remember off hand what it is called but i think it starts with GMT.
