My ADSL disconnects periodically

I've had my Uncapped ADSL from WebAfrica for three months now and it worked fine during that time. Now, randomly, since about a week ago, the line loses it's sync periodically. After it loses it's sync it would try to re-sync and fail for about 10 minutes before connecting again. When it connects, it would never get to the speed that it usually gets. The time that it stays connected seems random.

We called our contact at Telkom, who spoke to someone and he apparently said that we are too far from the exchange to get stable internet, basically the default excuse. It doesn't explain why my line has been 100% stable for three months and now it isn't.

Anything you think could be the possible problem?
 
Post your line stats please so I can see what the quality of your line is, the stats is on your routers configuration webpage.

PS The downstream speed was usually 1 mbps before the problems started (oddly, upstream speeds are unaffected). I never checked the other before so I don't know if they have changed.
 
You are about 4.6km from the exchange, that 63.5db(downstream is the important one) Line Attenuation is quite high. but you can sync even a 2Mbps line with that Attenuation, but no more than that.

Line Attenuation:
20bB. and below = Outstanding
* 20dB-30dB. = Excellent
* 30dB-40dB. = Very Good
* 40dB-50dB. = Good
* 50dB-60dB. = Poor and may experience connectivity issues
* 60dB. and above = Bad and will experience connectivity issues

Your SNR margin is very low, 6.5db will let the line drop and you wont have a stable connection.

SNR:
* 6bB. or below = Bad and will experience no line synchronisation and frequent disconnections
* 7dB-10dB. = Fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions.
* 11dB-20dB. = Good with little or no disconnection problems
* 20dB-28dB. = Excellent
* 29dB. or above = Outstanding

Hmmm, your stats are almost exactly like mine, except I sync at 6mbps and my attenuation is less, so that might be it.

I believe actually that since the problems started, I've moved from 50 -60 to 60 and above, and my SNR margin also went down. I never had a drop of problems with the line as I've said, until now that is. Nothing in my house changed that could effect the line. What could cause the SNR margin to drop?

Overloaded Exchanges, with the price of the internet dropping, more and more people are getting ADSL installed and the exchanges takes all the pressure.
Every night like clockwork my Attenuation goes through the roof at 7 o'clock and goes away after about 10 minutes.

About a year ago I had the perfect line stats and now it got worse but still alright to get a 8Mbps connection.

So basically what you're saying is that a week ago a few new people on my exchange got ADSL and thus screwed me into bad internet? Then upgrade the exchange telkom must. I pay them to give me internet, the must fix if broken. Right now my SNR margin is up to 12 db

I'm not saying thats whats causing your problem, but here in Bellville where I live I almost everyday hear of someone getting ADSL and they just keep on adding new Ports at the already overloaded exchange that can only support 1Mbps.

But Telkom will be upgrading all the older exchanges because of the speed upgrades in August.

It seems the most logical, because my connection seems to start stabilizing after 7 pm and then gets unstable again at about 9 am. It just seems very random that the problems popped up out of nowhere a week ago. Maybe just needed on guy to get ADSL to push it over the edge. Either that or they're actually busy upgrading the exchange, in which case they should hurry up.
