I've never understood the language fanboys. They're kind of like science deniers to me, they spout their hatred for x language on a website which is coded in x language. If you hate it that much then don't use it at all I say.

Having a live preview next to you is so convenient, but I suppose I'll manage with constantly pressing ctrl shift alt r to run the code in chrome.

Thats why I suggested just doing it in chrome source. Especially your style sheets and scripts it could save you from carpel tunnel.

Also, something I'll have to learn is how to make websites scale appropriately, if I zoom to 110% the webpage gets all wonky - but that's something I can focus on later.

Why would you want to cater for that?

Well the way I see it some people might have eyes that aren't so great so they view websites at 110% to maybe even 125% if they are sitting a bit further away.

But I'm getting ahead of myself I first need to learn many other things

From reading this thread I'm assuming you don't have a solid curriculum for learning.
Someone suggested Codecademy, did you have a look at that?
Codecademy will teach you html5, semantics, CSS and best practices.

Yessssss!
This worked perfectly.

I now have the live preview on my left monitor and the code on the right and it updates every time I save. Is there a way to get it to update without saving or am I being a spoiled child?

Haven't downloaded emmet plugin yet though!
