Howsit guys

longtime lurker here who decided to go for the 5 gig dongle on contract yesterday.

Applying for the contract (Pavilion westville branch) was painless and quick, and once in my hands i scurried back home to set it up and see if will be any good for xbox live.
Plugging in the dongle, all the relevant software was downloaded and then it came time to connect which resulted in an error message saying " the modem cannot connect until it has found an available network"

So i phoned my local Cell c branch for troubleshooting, and they seemed to think it was the sim, suggesting i try put it in my cell which i did, resulting in the message "sim error"

So i take the dongle and sim back to Pavilion branch and ask for a new sim or some kind of help and the sales guy looks at me like i have made a bad smell but agrees to check it out. They plug it into their pc and it shows the same error.
Now the sales guy is completely confused and says he has never seen this before and so he phones tech support who eventually tell me that i must just take it back home and they will contact me the next morning and try sort it out ( no word from them yet)

So here i am now... paying for a device that does not work. Surely they could have just given me a new sim?

Thats what i said.. but they say they dont have any. i sort of find that hard to believe.

Reiku_San, I feel your pain...

I was at the Cape Gate branch in Cape Town/Brackenfell last week to sign up for the contract as well but they said that the contracts will only officially be available from the 28th November due to technical issues with the contract sims ... I think this is why there was such a lot of confusion around the contract packages that was advertised on the website and then promptly removed.... and i believe it's now been added again.

Just hope it can be sorted out ASAP. I really want to ditch Vodacom!

Just make sure that your Sim is Rica'd.
Sometimes even though you produce your ID and proof of Address, the sales consultants fail to actually Rica your Sim.
The Sim wont go active unless it is first Rica'd.
Might be the issue or it might be something else :)

Wow its great to know that Cell C guys visit the forums :)
They contacted me and it is all sorted out!

Now to figure out how to set up internet connection sharing with my xbox.

A work colleague opened a CellC contract at Cavendish square over the weekend. Apparently the trick is that with pre-paid the modem comes with a SIM inside the box. While with contract they give you a modem and a separate SIM.

You can always stop at Tygervalley, N1 City and Canal Walk on your way to Cavendish ;)

Keep us posted on performance please. Really wanna know if throughputs consistent on that connection.

Finally got my data contract sorted out ... I'm now officially rid of Vodacom's excuse of a 3G service ... YAY!!!!!!!

Now I will monitor performance and keep you guys posted.

One thing I've noticed so far, NO DISCONNECTS and NO TIMEOUTS and consistent THROUGHPUT ..

So far so good (touch wood)

Hi guys,
I got mt R1499-0 pre-paid last Friday, rushed home to set it up and.......nothing happened! The PC "saw" the modem and attempted to install it as a CD ROM!!! There was no CellC software anywhere either. No matter what I tried, I could not get the %*&# thing to work! So I screamed across town back to Makro (my first mistake) and got in just before they closed. At first they hummed and hahhed, and I told them to put it in one of their display PC's ..and it did the same! Eventually they gave me a new one, and had to do the whole RICA thing again...but the RICA machine was broken!!! I was promised that it would be up and running by the time I got home, and the Makro rep would phone me as soon as the RICA went through...still waiting for that call.
This time it installed perfectly, and seemed fine, but page loading times were dismal! Switch off, re-booted, and things got better...not much though, and it was still dropping the connection every now and then and even local sites (SAreptile.co.za and Wilddogs.co.za) weretaking about a minute to load!. I got the sh*ts and went to bed threatening to do evil things to Makro involving a modem and vaseline! I was busy the whole day on Saturday and did not get a chance to carry out said threat, but tried again on Sat night...what a change! I wouldn't say lightening fast but 1 gazzilion % better in speed download times! Skype was a breeze even with the camera on and browsing other sites at the same time. Makro and CellC were forgiven...until Tuesday night!! Same Sh*t again!!
I tried everything, uninstalling, rebooting new drivers......no difference. Last night I tried again...what a pleasure Everything was hunky dory again. I have until tomorrow to make up my mind whether I keep it or not, I think they have 7 day return policy....anyone else had this?

Couple of mates have them. Amazing speeds, always more than 3Mbps, normally above 7Mbps...they just pump through their 5gigs in no time though, lol.

@Slashback, try alternative software, some people say a software package called MDMA can manage your modem for you.

Right.. day 4.

After they sorted my problems out on tuesday afternoon, i was able to connect but i found that my connection kept dropping every few minutes.
Fortunantly that sorted itself out after an hour or 2 , and since then its been smooth sailing! I sorted out my xbox live and am very impressed with the results!

Looks good so far!
