I need some help in choosing my fist car...
Have a budget of about R30k and sadly most of cars in this range have more that 150 000Km on the clock..
What reliable cheap car can one get these days thats just gonna get me from point A-B with few of less husles...
Was thinking the Toyota Conquest,Old VW polo(square lights) or The Opel Astra / Kadette

First car

think about getting a station wagon ie; opel astra, renault, etc
usually they are strong, looked after and can be extremely useful for work and play.
I have bought two to date never looked back since.

I say go for the toyota conquest. They are easy to maintain and keep running well.

Where about do you stay? I'll do a search for you in your area and put you in touch with local dealerships. If that doesn't work I'll contact my network of dealerships to find the car for you.

I'm getting my first car this weekend...
Datsun GX 1200, 43000 on the clock. Working perfectly. :D

But back on topic, a Golf is a good first car. It's parts are cheap and easy to get, and you can service it yourself.

Even the older polos 98 models still go for 30-40k and then its got 100k+ on the clocks.

the one guy in my team bought a conquest for 33k, had 165k on the clock when he bought it, it now has 188k on and the only problem he has had was self induced, as he put on 17" and lowered the car is scrapping all over the place. oh and he had to change a "releaser bearing" (i'm not sure what it is though) which was making a noise when the clutch was not engaged.

Thanks a lot...will be checking out conquests,Honda's as well as old Polo"s
Not sure how my 25 year old self will look in a station wagon...I see them as more Mommy cars...
Thanks again...

I've just bought a Ford Tracer (97) for 12 000, with 205k on the clock.

EVERY service was done, and mechanically absolutely fantastic. At that mileage, I am now averaging 7.2l/100 in short runs.

Basically what I'm saying is that a small Jap Hatch is probably the only way to go, and for 30k you could pick up something much better than mine and still be laughing all the way to the bank.

Conquest/Tazz/Mazda/Ford- all fine!!

talking about new cars....I could hardly believe the price of VW polo's
I have a 2006 1.9tdi sportline 3dr which at the time cost R181k, with the 6disk cd changer included.
now the same car (5dr) costs R232,000.00!!! thats 50k more!! in 3 years? thats madness! doesnt seems to have stopped people buying them....crazy

I have an Opel Astra 1.6ie 1995model, 180k on the clock
Recentrly had major service,(R8k)
  • Changed Shocks
  • CAM belt repacement
  • Spark plugs
  • Oil Filter
  • Air Filter
  • Skimmed Drums and Disks
  • Changed Brake Pads
  • New Battery
  • Alignment
  • New Tensioners
  • Not so familiar with car mechanics, they did another something on the engine to prevent leaks, some kind of a flat plate
  • Radiator Serviced

R23 000

That's R 9000 more than I paid for my WHOLE car!!

What car is that?

I priced at R23k because I recently serviced it for R8k+, I have service book and receipts to prove it. Reason for selling is that it is taking too much space I want to buy a bakkie.

I must say your very cheap:D be nice
