My first DSLR - urgent reply needed before the morning

Sure it's a fine camera but is a bit old (2.5yrs), the 500D & 550D replacements were already launched with the 550D being the newest. The 550D can be had for the same price (or less) except with only one lense.

If it was me I would buy the 550D.

Never make hasty purchasing decisions ;)

What sparked my interest was a telephoto kit I saw at Foto First this afternoon. It's the same 450D with a 18-55mm IS lens and a 55-250mm IS lens. It has a bag instead of the magazine. Also for R8999.

I don't really want to buy one online but I see what you mean about the price difference so now I am totally torn again!

If you guys had to get your first dslr camera what would you get to start off with? Which camera body and lens? And do you need a flash? etc etc

Whatever you decide, factor in the fact that the 55-250 lens costs R3000+. You'll probably inevitably want one eventually.

As other posters mentioned, the 500D and 550D is obviously newer, but if price is an issue I don't think you can go wrong with the 450D. It's still a good camera!

It includes the 55-250 lens in the R8999 kit.

I'd get a 550D. The 55-200 only seems attractive because it complements the range of 18-55 . . . which you'll soon grow out of because it's really not a great piece of glass.

Ok I will take a look around tomorrow. It seems the 550D includes a 18-55mm lens with it unless you just get the body. It makes sense to get the 550D. I already have a 12.1MP Nikon (not a dslr) and I know the lenses matter more than the MP but it would not make sense at all to buy another 12MP camera. Now just to convince the hubby that his contribution will be substantially larger.

Thanks for all the input. This is a new learning curve for me and I appreciate all the patience guys.

Well enjoy, I bought the 550D a few weeks ago - and loving it! My first DSLR btw.

My budget just didn't stretch to the 550D so I got the 450D with the 2 lenses for R7999. Now just to learn how to use it! It's so heavy!
