Right,

I'm off to go buy my 1st Mac, a Macbook Pro! Please tell me I did the right thing! :D

I made the switch about 3 years ago now, and never looked back. Took a while to get use to Mac OS X, but once you have the hang of it, it is awesome!
Got the "Missing Manual" guide, working through it now, and finding new tools and tricks that I never knew existed!

Best thing I ever did was make the switch from Windows... Say goodbye to "explorer.exe" has stopped working, security updates every week, anti-virus, etc etc...

Yeah, and he can say goodbye to games, easy upgrades and cheap hardware as well :o

what is easy to upgrade on a standard laptop (HDD and Ram) is easy to upgrade on a macbook (Even easier on a macbook than an HP actually).

I dunno if he is a big gamer, so that might not be a swinging point. OS X is getting the only two games i would ever consider buying a PC for, Portal 2 and Starcraft.

Some rather pay the premium and get excellent build quality and reliability.

Not quite.
Source is available for gaming, im sure more to follow.
Not sure what you mean about saying bye to easy upgrades, ram and HDD upgrades are super easy. And the efficient software doesnt require as many upgrades as a PC.
As for hardware costs, good quality and clean design comes at a price :D

Depends on whether you are a gamer or not. The only game I play is CSS which is now available on OS X. It also depends on the type of games you play, if you don't play stuff like Crysis etc then many games can be played via WINE/Crossover and if you have to play other stuff you can dual-boot which is not really cool I know.

Macbook Pro is the nicest laptop I've ever used. Light, solid construction, high quality screen, good keyboard (backlit!), the best trackpad, great software, performance is very good and battery life is the best in the biz.

It won't beat two Panasonic Long run batteries though....
