Hey Guys,

I would like some advice concerning a mechanical keybaord. This will be my first time buying something like this, and my budget is limited to around R1400. I was looking at these keyboards but do not really know what is the difference:

Cooler Master QuickFire Rapid-I, Wired, Mechanical, Cherry MX-Brown
Cooler Master Quickfire XT Stealth, Wired, Mechanical, Cherry MX Red
Razer BlackWidow, Wired, Mechanical, Razer Green Switches,

Now I would like to know, how much does the green switches compare to the Brown and Red.

Then I was also looking at a new mouse, something like this:
Logitech G500S, Wired, Laser, 4000dpi, is there something better in that price range?

Hi Japster.

The big decision of getting a mechanical KB... The true question is do you really need 1? What kind of games will you be playing? And with a budget of only R1400 you might find that the choices of mech kb's are very limited. My friend recently got the Corsair K70 RGB with Cherry MX Red (Which should be your top choice when it comes to gaming) Sad part is that the KB cost him R2600, and he has already had issues with it. Having a mech KB is not going to make you a better gamer. Yes you will have faster key press responses but you dont have to necessarily go the mech kb route to have that. There is other options in KB's with 1ms response time and anti ghosting keys...

When it comes to a mouse though there should be no compromise. Fist make sure which mouse suites you best; eg. claw or palm grip? And then it comes down to preference... P.S just because a mouse has a high DPI does not make it a good mouse... Most FPS players will recommend not ever playing on a setting higher than 1200dpi depending on the screen resolution. My personal preference is the Razor Deathadder (palm grip) mouse.

Hope you find this post helpful.

I would not only be using the keyboard for gaming, I'm a programmer by profession so I type a lot. I prefer a palm grip when coming to a mouse, but the razor Deathadder is just outside what I can afford at the moment. Since I would much rather go for the mechanical keyboard.

I remember when real men had AT mechanical keyboards that would kill the dark green motherboards when they were unplugged while powered.

If you're just going to use the KB for typing, then don't get a mechanical. Get a normal one. You might go insane with that constant clicking every day of your life:D

This is the keyboard you want:

I have it, and it's been amazing for gaming, typing and programming. The white backlighting is nice and understated and the brown switches are a good compromise between ideal gaming and typing actuation. The keyboard doesn't have intense light bleed like the Corsair K70 does, which I personally prefer. It also doesn't have macro keys on the sides of the keyboard, which is another personal preference. The price is also great. The build quality is good and not something I ever have to think about, and I haven't had to replace any individual lights. Oh, and it has a USB3.0 and normal USB port on it, which is uncommon.

I also had doubts about mechanical keyboards, until I bit the bullet and just bought one. Now I could never use anything but. It's an awesome improvement over conventional keyboards for basically every task a keyboard can be used for.

A good cheap alternative to the deathadder is the Corsair Raptor Gaming mouse.

If you going to be using it just for typing I would suggest blue, brown or green switches. The blue and green will have an audible click (like a bic pen) and a tactile bump.

The browns have a lesser click sound and a lighter bump. I have a brown for gaming and a blue for typing at the office. It's Very satisfying typing on both, it's hard to explain, especially the blue .

My brown switch is a logItech g710 and the blue is a cooler master quickfire pro.

Both are really good build quality.

Stay away from Razer. The Quickfires are brilliant. Brown has a nice click to it, red is completely smooth. I prefer a click. Brown is usually a great first choice.

A mech keyboard is like an SSD. You think you're fine without it until you get one. Then you can't survive without it. A mech keyboard was one of the best additions to my setup ever.

Just know this:

Mechanical keyboards are LOUD!

I also wanted to buy one. We have a guy we play games with who on TS, if he types his voice activation gets activated and you can hear the keys being typed. I still want one :o Just be aware that you will keep the house up at night with a keyboard like that :p

They are louder, but it's not something that's ever bothered me. Maybe some manufacturers are louder than others. Clicky switches will be louder though, so just get red or brown switches instead of blue ones if you have such concerns.

That being said, it's probably the only con with these keyboards. I really want one. But my wife will hate the constant typing at night. There are a billion Pro's and one con.

nobody else having problems with key bounce? or key chatter.

for example you type: e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e
and you get: eee e ee e e eee ee eee ee eee

Really frustrating.

Never experienced anything like that.
