My First time not using Micro$oft

IMHO

If you want to play games, stick with XP.
If you want to run a server, use Linux.

You may as well use your PS2 to run a web server as use windoze, and you may as well not play games if you want to run them on Linux.

Horses for courses.

I must just state that it will not run the latest less popular games without problems. The games which have native support like Doom3,Quake4,ET,Unreal Tournament 2005 etc. will run just fine.

BUT the games like splintercell:chaos theory, oblivian will not run well, if at all.

Also I must state that the performance of the supported(cedega) games will not be the same as it is in windows, it will run slower(alot).

So my advice if you use your pc mostly for games, keep windows for the games.

Have a look here for a list of supported games : http://transgaming.org/gamesdb/index.mhtml

/me hugs his gentoo and feels welcome between all the linux supporters...

IMHO I have three fav Linux distro's...

1. For Servers I prefer the redhat thing, so fedora is on my list of loved distro's...

2. For beginners I recommend any Mandrake/Mandriva distribution. That is what I started with, and yeah, it's good stuff..

3. For the more advanced user that wants more out of his linux I recommend Gentoo...this gives you the best options in my opinion...for installing, uninstalling, updating and keeping a system stable.

I want to try Gentoo as a server soon. Think it might be nice to have an always up-to date server, although Fedora has a very nice package mangement system itself called yum. I have had very few problems with it, and yeah, if yout put a little effort into it, it works beautifully...

Hi

I've been fiddling on and off with various flavours over the past few years. Mandrake 10.1 was pretty slick. Now Ubuntu has my interest.

1. Many popular games run fine under WinE (Windows Emulator)
2. Depends entirely on your needs
3. Yep, it kinda began amongst the open-source community before being ported to Win
4. Pretty decent. I installed Ubuntu 5 on my NF4-SLi/6800GT and was impressed with everything

Where can I download this emulator? Will new games work on it?

Disagree. Remember the graphics manufacturers advertising. "The way it's meant to be played!". If it's a game that has this on it, it doesn't matter whether it's linux or Windows. The nVidia driver works the same with these games. I've seen Doom3 run better on a Linux box, (higher frame rate, higher res than Windows), merely by killing most of the apps, then nice-ing the Doom3 program. It absolutely flew. Killed Windows by nearly 20%. With a bit of clever scripting, you can create an icon that stops the unnecessary services, nice's the game, and when it exits the game, restarts the services. Just depends on what you doing with your Box. However, until a larger portion of new to-market games get released cross platform, I'd stick to Linux. Remember it doesn't cost to upgrade from Windows to Linux, but vice versa will set you back a grand. So maybe stick with Windows for the time being, if you're gaming.

You understood me wrong I'm talking about games that are supported in cedega, not native linux support. Games that are native will run just fine, or even better.
