*This is my own opinion*

My iPhone 5 overview based on what has been shown at the Apple September 2012 Event:

First of all I think allot of us are socked. Some maybe shocked because this went beyond their expectations but most of us , including me, are shocked because of the copy-pasted product Apple unveiled. I've said this a couple of times now. It's feels to me like an iPhone4s-s (maybe this will change when I have the product in hand). I thought this would be a new ground breaking iPhone, it wasn't. Sure there are changes we were looking for that we got but the overall view to me is that it's an taller iPhone.I expected allot more from an groundbreaking company like Apple.iOS 6 ain't that much better as-well.Apart from a few new apps it stays the same thing.I'm not saying that every new version should be overhauled completely, but it still looks like Apple have run out of gimmicks that made them thè company. The iPhone 5's camera for example it's the exact same thing as the 4S's.Yes it has LTE , a ( slightly ) bigger screen.

I must say that I have never had an iPhone before and I currently can upgrade. It was either this or an Samsung Galaxy S3. I expected the iPhone to win hands down. Now I'm not so sure anymore. Of course you look cool saying "I've got an iPhone 5" but aside from Android or Apple being in the name , is the iPhone 5 really on the same level as the Samsung S3?

Give this a thought: Forget the iPhone 5 name , forget the Apple logo , say it was made by an company with no name ; it wouldn't be such a great phone in comparison with ALL other phones that was recently released...

Please give me your thoughts on the iPhone 5

In your opinion ... What exactly did you expect?

The S3 was also underwhelming when it was released. Sometimes specs can't tell you everything about a phone. The entire user experience can't be summed up by what is written on the spec sheet. That is where Apple succeeds. The entire package ties together so brilliantly.

It's a new iPhone. I don't understand why people always expect miracles from Apple. It's still a great phone and it's an Apple product so it is going to be top notch quality. Did people expect the new iPhone 5 to be able to make coffee or something? At least Apple doesn't market technology that doesn't work i.e. Samsung and its eye tracking software which works in the dark on the tv ad but in real life doesn't work in low light conditions and is a hit and miss affair in daylight.

I think this phone will be another great one.

Lest not forget we went through the same thing with the release of the 4S. Initial specs and features were seemed pretty underwhelming yet it became the fastest selling phone in history. Even the chip was on paper, slower than the Galaxy S2 (which was the phone to beat at the time) yet in real world test, it beat the S2 hands down. Apple has a way of making their real live usage of the phone exceed what the specs on paper say.

Also the release of apple maps seem quite impressive with free voice guidance and real-time traffic info provided by TomTom which means theres a good chance of it working here. Then there's the 3 microphones on the phone which provide 2 way noise canceling.

I may sound like an apple fanboi but i honestly view all smartphones, especially the S3 and Lumia 920 as really impressive devices but i just feel that the build quality and the way iOS complement the hardware to make full use of the power and battery is really something to make it stand out....just my 2c

Nope, apparently not in SA. (Read it somewhere around here and was also told by one of my ifreak buddies)

And just yesterday I was driving down the R55 behind a TomTom mapping vehicle. The local TomTom app is the bomb and I see no reason for Apple Maps not to work here even if I have to qualify that statement with an "eventually"... Oh, and I'm placing my anecdote into evidence as, at this point, it has the same validity as your post.

About people expecting miracles from apple. That's in stark contrast to how apple users get called sheep even though they expect the very best from apple. Every single thing on their phones must work unlike the other manufacturers who are able to get away with half baked tech on their devices.

And oh +1

There is always a very high expectation for a new iPhone, because it costs an arm and a leg!

I was expecting at least a better camera on the new phone, and some new features that would make me go "Wow!", but there wasn't any of those. The panorama shot feature looks cool, but Google already had that with their Android 4 release.

If you took all the Apple branding off the phone and try to sell it here, it would actually be competing with a Samsung Galaxy S2.

Exactly my feeling towards the ip5. All my fault. Was expecting a new groundbreaking design and something to keep the android fans to shut up for a while. This was like issuing ammo to the droid camp

At least Samsung put something in that is new. In this release of the iPhone there are a lot of upgrades but nothing that isn't available on a number of phones. Isn't Apple supposed to be the OMG innovators of the world?

By the way, my phone's eye tracking software actually works very well.

Hey, I'm just putting out there what I've come across and what this buddy told me (and I'd trust him, since he's one of the biggest apple fans on earth.)
Tell you what, load up ios6 on your phone next week (or whenever it's released) and then let us all know how and if the voice guidance works for you :)
If it does, I will humbly apologize...until then...I'll stick with what I mentioned.

EDIT: Not that this matters to me in the least...I just thought some people might find it interesting ;)
