Hey everyone!

So I finally managed to join the forum! Glad to be part of it, and my first post too! :p

OK, so after much reading and sucking in info on the newbie section, I have finally come up with my ADSL option. Please feel free to tell me if its a good/bad setup for my requirements...any input appreciated!:D

Requirements:
2 PC's to connect to 1 ADSL account at the same time for email, downloading/uploading files (not bigger than 5MB, and not very often), and just general surfing...

Once Off Costs:
1. Modem:
Billion 5102 ADSL Modem/Router 4-Port Switch, ADSL2+
R 544.09 (dig planet)
2. Telkom Installation
R 437.50

Per Month Costs:
1. Line rental R 99.92
2. HomeDSL 384 - Consumer R 245.00
3. 1GB Prepaid from WebAfrica R 75.00

Total cost per month = R419.92 :)

So what do you guys think? Will this setup be enough for what I need? Also, Im not sure if I should get the Billion or Netgear (Billion!!)? Any comments on either of them, or which will be a better buy??

Thanks!!
CF!

Welcome to MyADSL

I would say get the Billion router.

Your Telkom pricing looks right. AFAIK there have been some issues with Axxess ( search here ) - maybe look at 3Gb for R199 through WebAfrica, who have a good support reputation here, as do Billion.

if you get a "Netgear RP614 4-Port Cable/DSL Router 10/100 Mbps Switch" you will still need to buy a separate adsl modem as it is only a router. The billion is a router with a combined adsl modem.

I have the Netgear DG834G. Wired/Wireless ADSL2+ Modem/Router. Got it for R691 or summing like that. Very happy with it.

get the billion router and go for webafrica prepaid (R75 per gb), that way if you dont use up your cap in the month, it carries over, you only pay again when you want another gb.

Was thinking the exact same. R150 for 2gb but you get carry overs. Also why not do a self-installation and save yourself R400 odd

Billion Router

ISP Choices...

WebAfrica (R75 per gig) or TelkomInternet (Relaxed Capping)

I'd recommend Web Africa pre-paid to start with. It carries over i.e. unused bandwidth is always available. From there, you can look at "bigger" accounts.

Wow, thanks for the replies! Def think Im gonna enjoy my stay here, it has been very informative so far, and from what I have seem, its probably the most helpful forum around!

OK, so I see the problem with the Netgear...will opt for the Billion then, seeing as though it has a huge following.

Thanks for the inout on the prepaid...its seems like its the way to go as Im not usre how much bandwidth Im going to use. So dont wanna get too much or too little. The prepaid sorts that out cos I can just add on as I feel!!

Again, thanks so much for the input...very helpful bunch you are! Its made this learning process pain free!! :)

Oh, one more thing. Squirrel....what do you mean by a self installation? Im not hardware clued up at all, thought Telkom have to come in and do some kind of physical install on the line etc etc.

How would I do it myself? I checked my tel number and its good for ADSL...is it just a matter of getting the modem/router and plugging it all in???

Dont worry...After Telkom has "finaly" sorted your line out, give WebAfrica a buzz on 0861 555 222. They will help you with the installation process ...Basicly you would just need to enter your Username and Pass.
PS: just check this out....I see the router youve mentioned has been discontinued and been replaced with BiPAC 7202------> http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/index.cfm?a=h_view&model_id=224

Telscum still comes and installs the exchange at the telephone pole but thats free of charge as far as I know. You get charged for having a tech install filters and a router/modem.

As far as I was aware it was free atleast thats what I was told when I ordered my line. But I find on telscum site that they now charge you for the self install. R 245.80:mad:

Crap...discontinued...eish...back to hunting for another one I go (The BiPAC 7202 doesnt seem to have 4 ports like the 5102???)!

Didnt realise that it was that "fuss free", with respect to the install. Hell, even I can do that! Sheesh...so will then do it myself, and if I get stuck, will call WebAfrica...as I hear they are a very helpful bunch a peeps!

Thanks!!! :) :)

lol...Just remember...Discontinued doesnt mean "cant get"....youll still be able to get it...:)

Also have a look at Matrix Wharehouse for your router - they might be cheaper.

And have you thought of Openweb for an ISP?

My 2c!

To be honest ive never tried OpenWeb, so i cant judge....But what i CAN say about WebAfrica, is they are very good with service...I have a small company and rely quite heavy on e-mails......and i can tell you......i have had NO hassle...If my e-mails stop, my business stops....( if you know what i mean )...But obviously the choice is yours :)

I recon Im gonna stick with the Billion 5102, seems a few people are using it and its working great for them. Unless the stock is no more, I will look for another one.

I have thought about OpenWeb, but WebAfrica seems to have a better solution that suites me (the prepaid GB's), so I can just add on as I need. Also, the OpenWeb website has no real contact details etc, just a telephone number, and the info on the website is not detailed at all. Always a bit wary of websites like this and tend to stay away from them. I have read the reviews of OpenWeb, and many people are more than thrilled with them, but WebAfrica seems to be the one thats got my attention at the mo... ;)
