True that! And worst of all Forums are long out buddy, Social media and web 2 are now in. To jump start a forum now days without a niche idea is tough and virtually impossible. You gonna need more than a simple post here!
People are looking for new things and ways to interact on the web. Twitter is a good example of that!

in my 10 years experience as an online creative director and dealing with online share trading sites through to mobile operator sites i have never heard someone speak with such stupidity about creating UX and UI applications and designs.
net2.0 is a marketing concept - net2.0 in a nutshell, or social media as you all LOVE to to say but have no idea what you are talking about is the proliferation of user generated content like a forum.
to the OP of the thread. Ignore idiots like the one I have quoted who obviously know nothing. Keep at it and use google tools to help guide and craft and find that niche that is the only constructive point in the post i have quoted.
look at SEO and look at Google Feedburner and content syndication methods to determine YOUR user trends. And spends some money on adwords on Facebook and Google if you can.
Your forum will go as far as the effort you are willing to put into it. Ask the owner of this forum or any other successful forum.
