My next car (if we get it here):

Something to consider is that when you are buying used you are not always saving in the long run. When I was car shopping last weekend I was shocked to see that the difference I end up paying monthly over 54 months is but a few hundred (R200~R350) more if I buy new instead of low mileage used. I guess it is partly because I was going to make a 50% deposit but when you sell a car that has is still under maintenance plan and is a later year model you do score in the end.

Well, I'll be buying cash so that's not really an issue. I've been looking at newer models seeing as I'd like to stick with something still under a maintenance plan. If I wasn't fussed about that, then there are some A3's that are mighty tempting, but I've heard nothing but bad things about their running costs.

I'm actually getting married April next year, and kids are only planned in a good 6 years from now, so something compact and fun to drive is the ideal.
 
I've been married for 4 years now and the most depressing thing about buying the new car was when the salesman explained all the features and went "...and this is where you switch off the passenger airbag if you have a baby seat installed" and my wife looked at me and smiled. I don't know what to make of that smile.
 
We came to the agreement a while ago, that she'll get the family car (She loves Lexus) and I can have my impractical toy and we can swap should the need arise. I'm very grateful for her :p
So yeah, guess I'll find out how she feels about the 500. If she doesn't like it, I guess I'll go test drive a Focus or two.
