My e71 overheated and burnt-out.

Just behind the camera lens. The phone was off and on charge. I smell burning plastic, so I turn look at the phone and the camera lens is melting off. What the hell? All genuine parts. Genuine charger, genuine battery, phones only about 10 months old.

What could have caused this?

Looks exactly like this;

Probably a broken Li-ion charger chip. This circuitry controls the charge current to the Li-ion, if its too great, the charging circuitry will overheat and possible burn your phone.
Best to get your warranty replacement

Had the same problem with my e71 overheating by the camera. Send it in and Vodashop replaced the phone (refurbished I presume) Now my battery is stuffed up and the gps is not working. After Huge fights with Vodacare I just gave up
customer service sure sucks in this country

I'm going to take it to Vodacare Fourways today. Ill keep this topic updated with the outcome of this.

lol, its funny that whatever smartphone I have I always end up with a cheapy Nokia :)

Vodacare Fourways refused to Accept the phone for replacement saying physical damage is not covered by the warranty and wanted me to pay R550 for repairs. I think not, Since I have used the phone to their precausions and did nothing wrong for the phoned to be damaged. I took the phone to Vodacare Westgate to see if I could get a different answer, they said the same thing. Annoying. Its like hitting a brick wall. I gave up because I do have insurance on the phone so Ive made a claim. We'll see what they say.

Does anyone have a contact/Contact Details for Nokia SA who deals with Warranty replacement? I'd like to hear what they say.

1 two 1 Cellular in Craighall are brilliant at cellphone repairs. Nokia are their speciality 0118809043

Dude,go STRAIGHT TO NOKIA. Theres a NOKIA at Vodaworld, i will never take a phone to Voda unless its Voda branded, otherwise straight to the manufacturer.

seems it is better for your blood pressure (wallet and inn-sewer-ant provider) to buy a simple, cheapy phone and avoid these expensive full'o'gaggetry fancy phones....

i have enquired and have been told that you need to get your phone to a Nokia Care store, They need to have it assessed and find out if the burn came from internally and if this is the case they will either repair or more than likely have the phone swapped out.

Why did you buy Nokia? :D

Next time ask Vodacare what the ratio of Nokia to Sony Ericsson phones are that come in for repair. Probably 10:1

Thanks for the reply guys. I will take it to Nokia. I wasnt aware that the have a store at Vodaworld.

So here an update.

No reply from Nokia at Vodaworld for over a month. So I phone them and get told its water damage.

Thank you Nokia SA for informing me so soon as you knew. Thank you for lying about the water damage because I know this untrue unless the moisture in Johannesburg is able to destroy phones. Its nice to hear of honest company's every now and again.

I have lost faith in Nokia South Africa and will never get another phone from them again.

My E71 was 2 months old when it started to burn, went to MTN - 7 months back and forth later, phone was replaced with a russian model (no jokes) had all the russian lettering on the keypad, staff thought it was a huge joke. Kept going back every week so after the 7 months they gave me a refurbished phone, but all in all i`v gone gray and probably spent R2000 on the petrol, for what i dont know, should just have thrown it in the bin.
