Hi guys...
I'm got myself ADSL to play games, and have been doing so for the past three months...

The problem I have is this : My pings are generally 20ms+ higher than the average, and much higher (70-120ms) than the competitive players' pings (20-45ms)

If I do a tracert of the sgs games server , I get the following :

I live in Bloemfontein, and according to the tracert my connection to the games server (which is in Centurion) runs through Belville...
Is there anything I can do about this?
And if I can, how do I go about doing it?

Or should I just shut up and accept I'm never gonna be good @ COD2 (which REQUIRES low pings to be good...)

Geez, so I cannot go to my local Telkom shop and have a p##p on someone's head :)
This really sucks, my ping was normal for a week, and I joined a Clan, but now they'll all think I've fallen on my head or something, because I play like the noobs do...

Frag you also from Bloem ? Blikskottel man , I thought I was the only one that had freaking ping issues with games. I used to ping in 35ms - 50ms range, but since two weeks ago, my ingame ping now sits at 72-99ms !!!!

My SAIX account results are exactly the same as yours... :(

When did your ping problems start ? I'm also getting re-routed and its really peeving me off !

Well, it started about two-and-a-half weeks ago, then it was OK for 2 days, and now it's buggered up again...

I have a friend (lives in Heuwelsig) though that's still getting 30ms pings..
I live in Langenhovenpark, you?
Anyways, which games do you play online?
Nice to see another Bloemfonteiner on the forums :D

Frag, I live in Universitas-Ridge (so its just on the other side of the N1 :) ) and my connection also runs through the Langenhovenpark exchange. I mainly play Battlefield 2 , BF 2142 , but also play CoD 2, CSS as well as FEAR Combat.

My problems also started about 2-2.5 weeks ago, and just to show you my results:

I'm very busy via the week, and I still want to make a trip into LHP to find a Telkom techie to beat up and ask him what the hell is going on !? But I think they are busy upgrading the exchange or something, cause another friend of mine lives in Universitas and he had terrible pings like you and me for the past 2-2.5 months.

The night my ping problems started, he had sweet pings, but last night it was also a bit higher again. Before the weekend only for one day, things went back to normal, but alas... I'm back on the high ping.... once again..... *big sigh*

Maybe we should just give it some time, the problem will work it out eventually, I hope, or if you can find a telkom techie somewhere in LHP, ask him if they're doing upgrades.

I see your connection is routed through tpr??? Dunno where that is...
All I know is that I can't continue like this forever..

I'm considering going down to the TelkomDirect shop and asking wtf is going on...
I recently joined the UbS clan - nickname : Re83L , what's your nick on COD2?
Anyways, I hope to see you on the servers..:)
I've got BF2142 aswell, but am not so fond of the game, dunno why (maybe because my weapons still suck etc... lol)

Hey Frag,

The tpr (I also dont know what it personally stands for) but its part of a trace route address... type in your cmd prompt the following and see what results you get with both of your accounts and post your results:

tracert tpr-route-server.saix.net

Let me know when your going to the Telkom Directshop at College Square, cause I wanna go with you and also ask them wtf is going on !

My nick in CoD2 is StoneCold and in 2142 StoneCold[HF] (HF is my friend and my own clan and stands for Have Fun).. See you on the servers some time soon, with a lower ping !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to the Telkom shop today, spoke with the friendliest woman there, she had me on the phone with at least 15 different people.
At the end what happened is :
Useless:
1. - They reported a fault on my line.
2. - They told me to check whether I have a dial-tone on my phone..(Which I cannot because I don't have a normal telephone at all - do you?)
3. - I spoke to a techie who wasn't useful at all...
Useful :
4. - I finally spoke to someone at IPNET (part of Telkom that works out where to route the traffic...) He told me that he'll call someone and have my line and DSLAM checked (apparently too many ppl on the same DSLAM = crappy pings), and that he would then come back to me.
5. If this doesn't work, he'll give me the number of a specialist (like a techie on steroids of which there is apparently only two in SA??) who would be able to check for me...

Also having ping problems, NEVER less than 50, lately I am getting frequent spikes of about 120 which last a few minutes then goes back to around 70. Suxx

Frag, the friendly woman you're talking about, that wouldnt be Mrs. Graham ? she sits in the corner right at the back, because I ordered my adsl from her last year and she is very friendly.Anyhow, if you get any feedback from this oke at IPNET or get anything done to rectify your ping, please let me know as I want to go and do the same then..

One of my friends also told me that same story of too many ppl getting hooked up to the same DSLAM may increase ping times, and LHP is expanding like two bunnies humping one another on steriods, so its a possibility ! :D

So please let me know, if you get any feedback...

Thanks

Nope, her name is Hannelie...

Anyways, the specialist called me this morning and told me the following...:
The Langenhovenpark (and any other) exchange work as follows :
You're connected to the jumpers inside the exchange, which in turn, is connected to a DSLAM. Every DSLAM can support 9MB of traffic, the Langenhovenpark exchange currently only has one DSLAM with only 2MB worth of subscribers... There is also just this one DSLAM in LHP, so we can't get connected to a new one...

IPNET is TelkomISP's (and probably SAIX's) controller of how every connection is routed, so if our connection is currently being routed through Belville, only they can fix it..
I'm off to the TelkomDirect shop again, and will give feedback once I know more...

Thanx for the update Frag, let me know if you manage to find out anything else. I think you should contact me, if its possible for them to do something to get you re-routed, because I want my connection to be re-routed as well..

Keep me informed please.

Thanks.

If they fix my connection, it means they would have fixed the DSLAM's routing path, which would mean that you'll be fine aswell, being on the same DSLAM....
But anyway, I've just emailed a description of my problem to Openweb, and asked whether they could fix this problem from their side (seeing as the Telkom specialist told me that I've got to contact my ISP...)

The swift reply from Openweb was :
Basically, IS routes until the following router:

7 62 ms 145 ms 63 ms 168.209.86.166

This means, and routing done after this router is on the Telkom network.

Unfortunately IS has no control over the routing pass this point, and it seems like the Telkom SAIX Gaming network is routing you vai Belville, which is ridiculous!

I have also called a friend of mine at IS, and he confirmed what I sent you earlier.

I am so sorry I couldnt be more helpfull :(

Please shout if you would like me to mail anyone specific, or contact someone on your behalf. I will be more than happy to do this.

So it seems the battle continues...
However, I'm going away until Sat-evening, so I'll only be able to start a fight with IPNET on Monday-lol...

Thanx man, for the update once again. Seeing that you already emailed Openweb, I'm going to try my luck and email my SAIX ISP provider to see if they could perhaps manage anything from their side or any advice which they might have. Will keep you posted as well..

:)

Frag, any news from Telkom Direct ? I had a check this morning and my pings were 40ms faster than it was yesterday evening ! I couldnt believe my eyes, It must still go down a little bit further, but for the time being, I'm just glad things are looking on the up again... Still I cant believe we're getting re-routed like this.. let me know if you get any feedback once again..

/me holds thumbs that my ping holds up as it is for now
