I’ve been using Twitter since the beginning of last year. In that time I’ve tried some other, similar services like Jaiku and now Friendfeed. Despite some defections, competitors and complimentary services, I always seem to go back to Twitter.

But I’ve had several service interruptions. And now I’m getting fed up with Twitter.

Other people are also complaining, Mark at Mashable is using Twitter less, James Robertson mention some interesting tidbits and other users also have various Twitter problems.

I am not fed up with ‘having’ to use it, and neither am I showing the Twitter equivalent of ‘Facebook fatigue‘. It’s not that it takes too much time, or that it’s too ephemeral, or that it’s useless.

Twitter is none of those things to me. In fact, I use it productively in several different ways:

As entertainment instead of tv: I can spend hours following suggested links

With friends: we use it to organise coffee dates or even meetings

Communication: When my trains run late my colleagues know when to expect me

Update service: my wife now follows all the excitements of my day

Discovery: I’ve met new people over Twitter, even though they ended up working in the same building as I do

The problem I have with Twitter is that it’s become such a part of my life, I can’t function without it.
Unfortunately Twitter has had some major problems in the past year. There are regular service breaks, sometimes for maintenance, sometimes without an explanation, and sometimes updates just get lost.

I don’t know whether it’s Ruby on Rails that has problems scaling (see comments here), or whether Twitter is over subscribed, perhaps they are under staffed or over worked.
The bottom line is that it’s a service I’ve come to depend on, and it’ excruciating when the site is down. The text service works most of the time, but it’s much more expensive than using the online tools.
I have a problem with Twitter. Perhaps the problem is technical, or perhaps the problem is that I’m too dependent on it?
