Got my ADSL line a week ago and discovered this forum today - just had to share my (assume not so unique) Telkom story.

Applied for Telkom ADSL 384 about 2 weeks ago via the web (had an existing normal landline). Got a call from Telkom confirming the order the next day, asking if I would like to make use of the "self-install" option and receive a free wireless router. Said "yes please".

During the week-end (3 days after placing order) used a buddy's router to try and connect (just to see if anything happened), and low and behold - it worked!

Did the whole Telkom verification thing and started surfing away with my new ISP. Went to the Telkom shop on Monday and picked up the free router, set it up and continued to surf the net.

Two days later received a call from Telkom call-desk to confirm if I wanted to do a self-install - tried to explain that I have already done so and was using the service - was told that this was impossible and that I should be patient (?).

Next day - received another call from Telkom informing me that a technician was booked to do my ADSL installation during the second week of April since they still had to test my line and confirm it was ADSL capable.

While I am waiting, I will be watching my e-mail on my (fast) new connection for any feedback from Telkom...

Don't let them send out a techie! They'll charge you the installation fee for that. Call them again, tell them that you picked up your router and the line is working, and inform them that you're recording the call.
