I tested on Helderkruin tower on Saturday...

I had no speed issues at all..... thus, my theory. According to Sentech bandwidth is contended. Fair enough, we all know what this means and we all know what a load of crap that is.

If they bought x amount of bandwidth, I would think they would allocated y amount to 128k, z amount to 256k etc....

Now... what if they allocated y to 128k and z to 256k users, not thinking that those two packages would be extremely popular in the process overseling and now sit with a problem of not much bandwidth for those two speed groups. That is why I haven't seen much (if any) speed issues on my side being a 512k user.

Obviously the sales people don't think "oh wait, we can't sell anymore of these packages because the service would suck more and more for these users".... they just go ahead and sell sell sell...

TheRodent, what is your opinion on this? (Oh and if anyone see's ProAsm, point and laugh, the corporates probably got to him as well)

Anyway, yea.... laptops rule [:p]

Your theory ties in with IP allocation...66.x.x.x vs 196.x.x.x - that is how they do BW allocation.

The true test of character is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we don't know what to do.

yeah, but I'm a 128K user and have no speed problems, I pull anywhere between 8KB and 14KB, never see the full speed but only once have I seen speeds drop to 4K, for 1 day!
about the IP ranges, I also thought that was the bandwidth allocation scheme, but I was assisting a new subscriber last week, also a 128Kb user, and his IP was on the 196 range, so my theory now, its just a simple matter of Sentech running out of IP's.
Also, this user was on the new rosebank tower, also getting similiar results to me (Great downloads)
If you want my theory, I say that all towers that sprung up on phase II of the rollout are doing well, ie towers such as JHB international/ rosebank/fourways exchange , proabably the new sandton towers too.
there would be no reason for that other than bandwidth being divided into towers, not users
(ie (X bandwidth)/(y towers) of bandwidth allocated to each tower, hence the older towers have more users, and therefore lower speeds per user)
Thats my hunch
It would be interesting to try document this.
maybe we need to set up some system to check this out.
I guess that probably means I better set up a poll.
I'll see what I can do.

y oh y do myWireless users have to try figure out SENTECHS BLOOPERS!

lol, maybe you're getting capped [:D]

Ah i see, something like, if you have a server with a 100meg network router, but your other router thingy's linking back to the main server router is only 10 meg?

Rumor is that Sentech have just bough a big chunk of bandwidth from IS, but IS still consider them a small ISP, I wonder how much bandwidth they take from IS ?

There is the problem right there

As Dean said the Bough bandwidth, not bought
They always forget to get the whole thing and leave out the t ( 17 % of the what is required)

Just kidding dean :)

ha ha, spelling mistake !

Anyway, a second rummor is that they are looking aroung at companies to manage their network ?

110 still sux for me. Got a download speed of around 25kbs on sunday morning I think but that didn't last long. I downloaded almost 2GB of updates, pathes and junk using my 128k isdn this past weekend and didn't even stay connected overnight. On the other hand my 256k sentech probly managed 200MB during the weekend downloading all hours of the day.
