Hey guys.

I recently bought a beautiful Virago 535. its a 1997 model but don't let that fool you. its in immaculate condition.

I love everything about the bike, except the fuel tank.

8.5l is tiny. and not having a fuel gauge or light is VERY annoying, almost as annoying as standing next to the highway knowing you only have yourself to blame!

now I can live with the tank size if I must, but I was wondering, has anyone who owned a Virago changed the actual tank?
I read on reddit that some american dude changed his 535's tank with a Harley 883 tank. apparently it uses the same brackets, is bigger and has a gauge

You should not get stuck on the highway if your reserve is working ;) What do you think we did in the old days when there was no fuel gauges on bikes?

You can fit any tank you like to a bike with some mods. The only factor would be if it will fit the look of the bike.

after a bit of research I came to the conclusion that my reserve is not working as it should.

I started to sputter on the N1 after about 144km on the tank. switched to reserve and was stopped less than 500m later. after a few seconds the bike started again, and I drove to the closest off ramp, then died on that offramp, and I had 145km on that tank at the stage

I got some petrol and when I filled up after driving about 3km to a station, I put in just over 7l.

as far as modding goes, the bike has a new headlight, indicators, handlebars, mirrors and rear brake lights. I dont mind changing some things.

Could be that the tank has some gunk or rust at the bottom where the reserve is. Take the tank off and add a few marbles to the tank. Shake it about to get the gunk out. Just don't do it too viciously as you will dent the tank from the inside :D
