Hey guys and lady-guys,

There's been a ton of posts on here lately about Thailand holidays etc and I figured I'd jump on the bandwagon by posting a bit of my scuba diving experience over there. (Incidentally, this was the same week when the 8.9 quake hit off Indo.)

I did 7 dives in total, 4 around one island and the other 3 were made up of a pinnacle dive, a wall drift dive and a wreck dive.

I was never a fan of the idea of diving wrecks as I always considered it to be garbage polluting the natural sea world. Man was I wrong! The amount of sea life which gathered in and around the wreck was simply humbling.

I wasn't going to post it here because I didn't think it would be interesting to anyone other than my immediate friends, but I noticed my one diving video already has over 300 views, so here's hoping some of you enjoy it as well.

This was taken with my gopro and normal housing. I was able to pick up a proper dive housing afterwards, but they weren't released yet at the time of my trip.

I'll try post a few stills of the fish/etc. later on if anyone's interested. Just need to upload it 1st.

Some more info of the wreck: It was a car carrying ferry which sank off a reef about 15years ago near the Phi Phi islands. There is suspicion that it was an insurance fraud incident as the captain was very experienced in the area and the reef he hit was also very well known.

There is an abundance of Lion fish, barracuda, eels and random other silly fish living in and around the wreck. The wreck starts at 16m deep and goes down to around 30m. The deepest we went was roughly 25m.

The reason i'm not wearing a suit in the vid is because even at that depth, the water temp was still around 28-29 degrees.

Cheers

Very lucky fellow you and really nice m8, another bit of trivia is that did you know they were playing "house" music when it went down because a lot of now call it home....:)

Lekker, I haven't deep dived, but snorkeling in those warm thai waters is so pleasant and seductive it can be dangerous lol, just drifing to the swell, breathing and being where you belong, weightless and surrounded by the waters of life.

Nice, I have not dived in the East for a few years, need to get back there, the warm water is great !

How/where did you attach the gopro? I'm looking at getting one for diving.

..actually.. i wanted to pick one up today, but not sure what/where take ebucks on a Saturday :(

I had a velrco strap around my hand and then secured the gopro to that using a carabiner. That way I could simply hold the cam in my hand to point it to exactly where I wanted it. Whenever I needed to use my hand, I'd just drop the camera and it would hang secured.

Make sure you get the proper GoPro dive housing though.

Unfortunately GoPro only released them after my trip, but I got one recently anyway. Here's the comparison video between the normal gopro housing (standard with any gopro cam) and the new dive housing:

Great video, nice song to accompany it too.

Thanks, I thought it was a little cheesy considering that Porcelain was used on the soundtrack of "The Beach", which was filmed on Koh Phi Phi which was visible in the background of the dive spot.

Just ordered my dive housing... and will order the gopro outdoor in the morning :p

Thinking of somehow attaching it to the dive suit hoody - or something

Any tips on using the gopro with diving?

I'm not sure if the hand approach is going to work for me cause my hands are usually all over the place.

I believe that many parts of the world are now intentionally sinking old ships and seeding them with coral specifically to start creating new coral reefs and eco systems.

Very nice videos :)

Xrapidx , Check my videos which i did via handheld & carabiner on a velcro strap and decide for yourself. It allowed me to film more flexibly without shaking from moving my head too much. I was also able to record morays and lion fish upclose without sticking my face in them.

I kept trying to find mask mounting positions but it was too much of a ball ache. I found that i hardly use my right hand & whenever i did, i would drop the cam to dangle from my wrist.

Just for safety i put an elastic around my housing after i had my first dive & the clip came loose at 25m depth from too much pressure. Luckily i had a band with which i used to secure the cam housing.

Thanks Astro. I can't wait to go diving again with the new housing.

Id love to go dive ww2 wrecks. There are some spitfires around pulao. Thinking of diving the Philippines next. Maybe in Dec.
