I have a 1997 golf 1.3 and its starting to give me grief. the other day when i switched on the ignition the light that indicates the brights is on came on even though the lights wasn't even on and the rev counter jumped up and down and it wouldn't start. i know a bit about cars and so i checked under the hood. nothing that i could see and when i switch it on i can hear the coil making a noise like shorting. after fiddling around i discovered its the main wiring harness. after just wiggling it the problem went away but now the battery is fried .

this car is testing my patients, the engine has been completely re done at a cost of R10 000 after only 100 000km and i kid you not, the steering rack has also been replaced and now this.

i really want to sell it but how much will i get for it? R25 000? more? its not that i don't have the money to buy a new car it just seems a wast for me at the moment.......................
i would probably never buy a VW again

what to do what to do??????????

Edit: When its working fine its all good but at the moment the negatives is more than the pos ugh

Buy yourself a new vw polo vivo and save yourself further headache and stress.

After owning a golf, std equipment in your car will be a list of things to fix,
I just need to fix this and later I just need to fix that.
Most of the photos of me in my early 20s was under the bonnet...

Selling it would bring you bad karma, just scrap it :D

Why have you neglected the car so badly? Seems to me the car only gets attention when it's already broken down. :erm::D

Ducking and running.

I also have a 1997 1.3 citi golf but in the process of selling it.You wont get R25k. You'll be lucky to get R20k. I am lucky and already have a buyer:D

geez it's a 13 year old car ...that seems normal to me ?!?!? normal wear and tear ...

It isn't normal to have the engine reconditioned and the steering replaced with only 100k Km on the clock. That tells me that the car is/was not treated well.

I had many Golfs and Jettas and never had to recon an engine. All of them were sold with more than 250k Km on the clock. On these cars I replaced only one clutch and one waterpump. I still have a 1990 Jetta Csi which is going strong without any problems after 20 years.

When a citi acts like that after only 100 000km you have to know someone treated that car like a welcome mat..

yes i also though that it should have lasted me at least until 200 000km. when we bought it it only had 90 000km on it. whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. i had a ford lazer with over 200 000km on it and never a problem

appels, that doesn't sound like original mileage to start with...100 000 is low mileage for a car that old, and if the engine is stuffed it was probably clocked...the poor bloody thing has probably done 5 times that mileage. Our local doctor has one with 550 k on the clock and it is still running sweetly.

Well I think u need to replace the engine harness if ur engine was a bit bigger u could have converted it to MP9 and it looks like u dont wanna spend money on da car.........u also spent way too much money on da engine did u maybe buy a new recon with dat and have it installed? Cause I think dat would have even been cheaper............lol.........

Your probably right the mileage counters on those ones only went to 99999 before it started over.

I had a 98 1.6 with just over 200 000 km and it still running today

So what you are recommending is repeating the mistake he made?

OK, so newer VWs might be more reliable and buying a new Vivo might not turn out the same way it did with the Citi - but he will still be just another swimmer in the sea of Yaros and Polis's.

There are much better 1.2l cars from Korea these days and they are a lot more fun than any VW. I myself am getting a new Corsa after seeing how much you get ripped off buying a VW. Plus VW is just oh so common and unimaginative.

VAGs FTL.
