My Samsung a53 fell 5 meter far today, landed on cement. I picked it up, screen is okay. But mic is not. Are there a way to try and fix it, but I suppose the screen needed to be removed. I did restart the phone. Age about 1 year old. Any expert advice

Wait for all the experts.

Could be a cracked PCB, damaged mic, or anything in between. Will need to take it to get repaired or try and risk opening it and inspect the mic area.

what does *#0*# tell you?
should be a Microphone test on the menu, if the microphone is broken,
guess you could use the phone with a headset still, otherwise probably daughter-Board needs to be changed,

according to Ifixit,

I personally would never used a phone that has been opened up and repaired. I would use this opportunity to upgrade to an iPhone if I were you.

Is the mic missing on this screen print? Screenshot_20231122_205509_HwModuleTest.jpg

Take the phone to reputable repair centre. Either Samsung or Vodacom (they repair phones bought through other networks also I believe)
Yeah, but in Cape Town it's possible they'll have to send it to Joburg

If he takes it to Vodacom and it is a serious problem then it might have to be sent to the Vodacom ARC in Midrand yes. But the local Vodacom repair centres can fix a large number of issues in their own premises. I used to work in Vodacom Shop that had its own VodaCare back then. It looked like a clean lab. Techs wore gloves etc. had the machines and tools to replace screens (LCD, AMOLED, and the glass also. Batteries...no problem. Sure a mic won't be a biggie..unless something in circuitry broke.

That wasn't my experience with Vodacom. Perhaps because they were contract phones to be checked and repaired under warranty. Also I ditched them 5 years ago, maybe they upped their service. Who knows.

A paki shop quoted me R2000 to repair, they got another phone which screen is gone, they will replace till it works. I am currently using my old A50.
