Ya seems NL (maybe EU in general) likes their built in appliances in the kitchen so it stays behind.

But floors? Lights? Nah stuff it thats mine and I'm taking it with me!! Praise RNG our rental at least had floors. Ya it was a crummy 1mm thick carpet just laid over concrete in the bedrooms but it was there.
I'm still confused about the floors. Why?

Because f u that's why!

I was told most people rent for long periods (10+ years) and they like doing their own floors to make it more personalized. Then I get confused because I thought the Dutch were cheap

A lot of the time floors are ripped out during renovations...then the landlord just decides that the new tenant can pay to put new floors in. It's nuts.

Luckily my place was brand new renovated, from scratch. Fiber internet cabled to every room.

I have a signed rental agreement AND the keys to my place already. Just not living there, 'cos no beds etc.

The signed rental agreement was enough for registering.
I still assembled my IKEA beds the day we moved in, without any of my power tools!

Sounds a bit like those stories of walking uphill to school in the snow both ways yada yada :p

You just need an ALDI or IKEA toolkit. ;)

Christ, what an absolute pleasure dealing with the Gemeente in Utrecht.

In and out in less than 15 minutes. Got residence permit and BSN number.

I have never experienced government service like this.

Nope...it was a nightmare. We applied 3 times for this place that said No Pets...eventually we convinced the owner by adding €150 p/m to the rent.

OK thanks and did you have to pay a larger deposit or rent upfront? Or just the higher rental amount per month?

So wait. If I see a place on funda.nl, go view and like it (with flooring in place) and rent it - Is it possible that we will arrive there on moving day and there will be no flooring because the previous tenant removed it?

We offered 6 mnth's rent up front...or triple deposit and higher rent.

Landlord ended up being a cool guy...only accepted the higher rent offer. Only 1 month deposit.

We were very lucky I reckon.

That law has changed. If you rent for 2 years straight, you have squatters rights in the sense that the landlord cannot then terminate your contract.

So most landlords give a 1 year and then month to month. We hope to at least stay 2 years in the same place...buying has ecome a nightmare here.

No I really very much doubt it. You will rent it as you view it. The floor cannot be removed after you have accepted and signed a rental agreement.

Most if not all places on FUNDA without floors and fittings are clearly advertised that way. And they are by far in the minority.

Tenants do not remove floors and take it with them...that is nonsense and obviously not practical.

It is places that were renovated or "gutted" by the owner after previous tenants moved out.

Perhaps a good PSA, especially for newcomers:
Make sure you have at least one smoke detector per floor. Mandatory from 1 July, although I wouldn't expect any real policing other than if you ever have a fire related insurance claim.

I must say the people are quite diligent re, this. Both my property broker made a big thing of pointing these out in my new house as well as the AirBnB landlord too. Pity they flash every few seconds a rather bright white light...

Any advice on where...preferrably online...to buy desks for office use in the home?
Ikea
The ones with the round screw on legs are not great, but with a set of drawers on one side its already a big improvement (it's what I use). If you get the ±€200 ones with metal legs and height adjustment they are very sturdy. At the office they only have these desks

Edit: but the table top is of course chipboard with laminate or whatever. So if you want real wood look elsewhere

Look on Marktplaats, plenty of places selling second hand office furniture for prices similar to Ikea. I got a massive height adjustable Ahrend desk for like 80eur.
The killer there is the delivery charge though, so be aware.

There are also 2nd hand refurbished office equipment shops. I know there is one in Veldhoven.
