"There will be free servers, but SA still set to be left out in the dark
Earlier this month we reported that Gamservers had announced an exclusive deal with Activision to host third part Call of Duty: Black Ops dedicated servers for the PC release. Unfortunately, Game Servers has no presence in SA, which means that unless something drastic happens, we will not have local servers for the game. This means that it will be impossible to play the game online locally with decent latencies.
We also reported that Game Server provide the option to suggest new regions for their servers. Game Servers since responded stating that South Africa has been flagged as a high-demand region. Since then, there has been no mention of the possibility of local servers.
Despite our best efforts, as well as the efforts of local distributor Megarom, we have been unable to get any feedback from Activision.
The publisher as well as Game Servers have however spoken to IGN about the system.
"We are extremely excited about this unprecedented relationship with Activision to offer dedicated servers exclusively for Black Ops", said GameServers CEO David Aninowsky, confirming again that the deal is exclusive, and there will be no other way to get legitimate third party servers for the game.
Treyarch's Josh Olin further cemented our fears, stating that "If players want to run a dedicated Ranked or Unranked server on the PC, they will have to rent one through GameServers." He went on to explain that there will also be free to use servers provided by Treyarch, but again, these will be run through Game Servers. "Treyarch will be providing a fleet of 'Day-1 Servers' (through GameServers) which will be up and operational on November 9th," said Olin.
"Nobody will have to rent a dedicated server through GameServers in order to play the game," says Olin. "But for anybody who wants to run their own server, it will be run from GameServers.com."
While this is good news for gamers in most first world regions, it does not provide any hope for SA's gamers.
