Hi all,

I am in need of advice. I have one of those myMeg500 contracts using a E220 USB modem for connection.

I find that some months i need to use more than the allocated 500MB which is fine for browsing but sometimes i need to watch streaming vids /technical podcasts and app downloads to play around with. in these cases 500mb gets used up very quickly.

I went into one of the vodacom shops to check what a top up bundle would cost and was told it's the same price as what i payed for the 500mb!! so that means R249 for 500MB.
I was under the assumption that it would be cheaper - is this true or was the guy from the shop telling me stories???
and not sure how accurate that usage meter is that ships with the e220 dongle but it can work out expensive if u go over your 500mb and that doesnt help me either.

Question is - what would my current options be? I'm not in a position to fork out + - R500-R800 monthly fees for ADSL so for now that ant an option for me. I have to stick with what i have - my 2 year contract should be up by end of July this year.

cheers,
sup

Take look at the recent discussion on contract vs. pre-paid. You should find some answers there: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=150742

You might just be better off upgrading to a 1GB contract for R100 more each month or buy an ad-hoc bundle when you need more data. The usage meter in VMC is notoriously bad, things did get better in version 3.2. You can look at a 3rd party tool like NetMeter to help you keep track of usage or simply move to pre-paid / top-up where the data usage is counted in real-time.

You can see all the bundle prices here: http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/mobile_data/vodacom_what_cost.jsp

Try asking for the Top Up Data contracts. From my understanding they work and cost the same as the normal contracts, the only difference being when your megs are finished, it's up to you to top up with airtime and convert to continue. If you're going to be paying the same regardless of the contract, why not get something a little more flexible?

I don't understand what your problem is with the TopUp contracts, please elaborate.

Me or him? ;)

I personally prefer the TopUpData, no nasty bills when the Automatic Updates decide to run.

I prefer the TopUp Data contract because it's a little safer on your wallet from my understanding. Basically it works the same was as a normal TopUp contract, but instead of getting airtime every month, you get data. Same rule applies, if you finish your data, then it's up to you to top up with an airtime voucher to continue using it.

Unfortunately though, i don't think the unused data carries over. It would be brilliant if it did.

The TopUp Data contracts seem perfect for those people that aren't sure of their usage, and/or have kids that could surprise them with a massive bill after watching youtube and other such things.

I agree with WolfByte, I also feel that using the the top up is good for user's who usually exceed their contract limit. I usually use pre-paid (MyMeg 500) and enjoy bouncing from one bundle to the next as my usage requires. But if you on contract the the top-up is tops!! :)

The cost of your 500MB is more expensive than on a normal prepaid seeing as you get the modem for "Free" on the contract but if you allready have a modem and decide to go for normal prepaid the prices is as follow 250MB for R139, 500MB for R189, 1GB for R289....just dail *111# on your phone, select "Bundle Purchases", "Data Bundle" and you will get the full price list.

The only drawback for some people going for prepaid is the fact that when your cap is finished you need to purchase airtime for your SIM and once you have the airtime loaded you need to convert it using *111#, but seeing that I never get unexpected bills for OOB on my prepaid it really doesn't bother me that much:)
