MyMTN Home Internet woes

So I received this lovely email yesterday from MTN (extract):

As part of MTN’s ongoing efforts to improve the customer experience and ensure optimal network performance, MTN South Africa will be adjusting the bandwidth speeds on the MyMTN Home Internet packages when customers exceed their Fair Usage Policy (FUP) threshold, effective from 1 May 2024.

So naturally I was quite excited. After all I'll be getting a nice speed bump..... however, this is what I got instead

So I think the time has finally come to move on, especially since I've got a months long fault still unresolved.

I've had a look around and came across offerings from Axxess and Vox (both Telkom 120GB capped).

Are there any other LTE offerings I might consider?
Month-to-month or prepaid only please.

We upgraded our MyMTN last month, perfect timing. No ways we'll reach the new FUP.

Yeah. It was good value for money even with the price increase (Disney+ sub kind of made up for it), but this doesn't sit well with me. I'm definitely not enjoying an "improved customer experience".
On the contrary, I've once or twice went past the FUP just before the end of the month and the reduced speed experience weren't too bad.
This speed reduction now makes it practically unusable.

Yep, strange that they want to alienate a newly liked market gain. Maybe too many were over-using the past-FUP option, we actually kept back some downloads to take advantage of that later on our old package.
They're gonna get bad press about this though.

The throttling is getting worse. 512kbps and even 1mbps is definitely not a useable speed.

Thanks our MTN Home is up for renewal soon.
These deals look better, so unless there is a "woes" thread for them in the next few months I will be moving to them too.

1. No free-to-use modem router, min. charge for a modem router that fits MTN's requirements (it's still their network) is R1500.
2. Setup involves Telkom somehow, no thanks. Just got rid of them
3. Fair Usage Policy softcap of 4Mbps is only for 50GB, then drops to 2Mbps (MTN Home is 1Mbps)

What is great is the FUP only kicks in @ 600GB (MTN Home is 300GB) , if you need that much..

A big fiddle to switch over for us so I'll rather wait in out, just R130 more and I'm sure MTN Home will have to improve their offer soon.

Can anyone here comment on Afrihost as an ISP? Have seen mixed opinions elsewhere.

We do use them for VOIP, no problems with that.

1. Easy to find a compatible 2nd hand router. Market is flooded with 4G modems as people move to fibre/5G.

2. How does that work?

3. Still way better than MTN's offer and it's dropping to a dial-up like 512Kbps come July.

• Thereafter 4Mbps for the remainder of the month.

• The setup does not involve Telkom; we have separate Telkom LTE packages

Dealt with them on a couple of occasions w.r.t. fibre line faults and it's been nothing less than great.

There's one ongoing install issue experienced by a family friend that just cannot be solved though, but I suspect it's more a problem with Vumatel as the same issue arose with Webafrica.

Yes. Capacity issues, but a mix up with the address caused a months long delay.

More a cost issue for us.

More detailed info wasn't clear cut to find and now it seems not specific enough either based on @Afrigirl 's reply. Only one package described that I saw, but there's obviously more than that.

Didn't know, thanks for the info. Someone should challenge that legally, how can they dare call that "uncapped"??!

Maybe the answer is for you to provide links for both LTE 20Mbps offers' details please, then we can figure out the differences with ease.
That part of your co.'s website is not well laid out.

Personally - definitely sticking to MTN now, a 100GB softcap is poor in comparison.
