A little birdie mentioned that Sentech are considering shaping the traffic on their network. The network is perfectly capable of trafic shaping and was supposed to be enabled at launch time but lack of time and resources prevented it.

Now don't all **** yourselves at once, shaping isn't the same as capping or throttling traffic, but what it does mean is that we may see priority given to RTP (voice/video) time sensitive traffic over ftp or P2P-type traffic. This is not a bad thing and may well pave the way to additional services in the future. A 512k "Premium" package with QoS was hinted at.

If this does happen I may be in a better situation to glean more info on the slow-downs and the overall network architecture so we have a better understanding of how the network is structured.

Great. I'm happy with that. EXCEPT THAT THIS DAMN NOT BETTER HAPPEN WITHIN THE TIME I SIGNED UP FOR MY 2 YEAR CONTRACT, SINCE THAT, MOTHER****ERS IS WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR!

Traffic shaping, throttling, and all those things fall under the same topic - PORT PRIORITISATION, which, I might add, was specifically EXCLUDED from Sentech's arrangements when I signed up.

I don't see how QoS will give you any more insights into the badly run network that is Sentech, than what can currently be attained? Unless, you are going to be involved personally in the project that will castrate our service even more...

well, i've only noticed that in the last week or so, i have been unable to connect to port 2082 on a specific server that i always used to connect to. I can connect to the same server's port 80 with no problem at all. From a dialup i have none of these problems.

I have noticed this with not only this port, but a few other "not so familiar" ports.

Port prioritisation is a reality. IIRC, on their website they said that they don't do this.

Why the **** did they have to go change.

Oh great, does that mean it becomes like ADSL where only ftp and http work and everything else grinds to a halt? The whole damn reason I dropped ADSL is to get away from that crap.
