What is interesting for me on these boards, is that some people are have speed problems while others are not. I would guess that there is no single cause or magic bullet here.

For example, I myself have had my own share of problems. Largely the "remote comp did not respond variety". About two weeks ago I adjusted my antenna which I had given a certain company a small fortune to install a couple of months back. Basically climbed on the roof myself and twiddled it around while using MySignal. And wammo I have never had it as good as it is now. OK I lie, I did get a lot of the ".. not respond" thing last weekend but I remain convinced that has something to do with the tower being shutdown or under maintenance. But in terms of speed etc it is rocking. I am only on te 128k package of course, but I am getting as follows:

MyADSL Speedtest (local) : 133.60
BB Place Speedtest (US) : 107.3

Downloading with Flashget I easily hit 14k on international sites. This is fully acceptable on 128k.

I think we need two things, more info from the community as a whole to try see whats going on. There is an absolute fixation on signal strenth which I am beginning to suspect is misleading. So I suggest / request that MyWireless users answer in this forum with the following information:

Package :
Tower :
Signal :
S-N-L :
BER :
Antenna :
Speedtest (Local):
Speedtest (int) :
Time of Test :
Comments :

This will help us maybe spot paterns etc. Do this even if everything is fine. Thats also important.

Well I think this could help anywayz.

Package : 128k
Tower : 82
Signal : 20 - 25
S-N-L : 9 - 12
BER : 71%
Antenna : Grid directional
Speedtest (Local): 133.60
Speedtest (int) : 107.3
Time of Test : 21 May 15:30
Comments : Occasional did not respond problems, suspect due to tower maintenance.

MyADSL Local (South African) Speed Test
Your current bandwidth reading is:
53.40kbps

I'm on 256K package, tower 12 (Mintek)

There's a f*ckup somewhere.....

I have noticed that whether the 'speed test' of sentech shows that Im getting 400.25KB or 1.2MBps - it seems to make no difference to the supermonkeys at the Call Centre - regardless of what speeds I say I'm getting, the old 'its the contention ratio' rubbish gets floated. This just adds to the confusion.. Maybe as an experiment, people should start posting their 'speed tests' along with the response from the Call Centre - just to see if there's any commonality in responses. If we werent being lied to so continuously, the speed test might have some use in helping determine what's going on with their network..
*grumbling, he trudges off down the trench*

Both in JHB

GF lives near the Sunnyside tower. By fiddling with his antenna, he can choose which node (tower antenna) to receive, and the difference is dramatic. He has email me a bandwidth graph which I posted here :
http://rational.co.za/MyWireless

So finding a different node and / or tower can make a big difference.

Sentech can sit and swivel with my data - if they can't be bothered to give decent customer service, I can't be bothered to even bother anymore.

I'm getting tired of seeing this forum as being the only "support" that's available.

So, without further ado :-

Package : Big ! - yeah !
Tower : Sarumans lair !
Signal : I'm turning left
S-N-L : Male-Matt-English
BER : Beer ? - yes please !
Antenna : Bunny Ears
Speedtest (Local): 0.60
Speedtest (int) : 1.3
Time of Test : 23 August 15:30
Comments : Pr0n !

Ahh yes. Doing anything constructive poses the danger of taking away our bitching rights. We'd much rather wallow in our misery and feel superior.

Idiot

No wonder your eyes are bleeding...I would too if I didn't have a sense of humor :-) Lighten up (uh, not literally, OK)

OK, I've put up a speed test page on my domain, at http://rodent.za.net/speed/

It will request a speed test username (can be anything basically), do the bandwidth test, and store the results in a MySQL table. From the table, we can the draw a set of reports per username, IP and date/time to view any kind of trends in Sentech's bandwidth provision.

The speed test server itsself is hosted at Datapro, an ISP with pretty strong SAIX, and IS peering points. It will also give a good indication of what Sentech's peering strength is then at various times of the day.

I haven't drawn up a page to report the results yet, but will do that shortly.

aftermath - I'm also on Tower 12 but 128 K only - I get about the same as you. Do you also have problems with T12 - as in your modem locks on to T82?

Nice RoDent - thats just what we all needed [;)]
