Hi there

I am looking at using either Sentech's MyWireless or WBS's iBurst services in the near future. Having read both forums I am still not convinced as to which is the one to go for.

Besides the service complaints which are common accross both services (it seems), do any of you have any other motivating factors as to which provider to go for.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A lot of info you get will be tainted for obvious reasons.

I'll try to advise from an "average users" perspective, as opposed to what most the forumites are - rabid addicted biased broadband consumers ! :)

My advise :-

Vodacom3G

:D

Seriously though, it depends what type of internet user you are.
MyWireless I would not go for - it's more expensive than iBurst overall and a lot slower. About the only advantage is there's no CAP.

The lowest package, 128, will offer you 5kb/s download speeds on average.

If your not a heavy internet user and have a laptop, the Vodacom3G 1gig package may be a good deal, assuming your on the road a lot.

iBurst I can't really comment on - I've seen it in action, read a lot of complaints but also a fair share of praise.

Vodacom3G is the cheapest in terms of initial outlay, by a long margin.
iBurst for a month by month you'll need to fork out R2100 or R2800 upfront for the modem.
MyWireless doesn't do month by month according to the website.

Bottom line, with SA Broadband right now, don't sign any lenthy contracts.

Yeah Sentech also allow 7 days to test.

I tried Vodacom 3G for a few days. Cancelled my contract because my signal was very poor and my connection kept dropping.

I have been waiting 2 Months now for Telkom to come and install ADSL and have given up. It took them 3 months to install 1 landline.

I have been looking at the following two packages:

MyWireless 256k
iBurst 3Gig Professional

Yes, you can get a month to month contract. Most expensive of the lot though - R800 (sorry, R799...) for the 256 for example. You can get it through Nowire and one other company (cannot recall the name). Idiots still charge a connection fee on top of this as well...

i am also looking for option between sentech and iburst(not considering telkom because they take 2 years to install) and i am going to primarily be gaming... NOT FPS but rts and mmorpg... so seriuosly sentech or iburst?? dont beat about the bush plz... AND THIS IS SPECIFIC TO GAMING!!

I would recommend Sentech over iBurst in general. Sentech seems a little faster. But for gaming going wireless is wrong at this point. The latency is too high. Sentech's port shaping seems to be better on gaming (atleast on the 512k package) as well currently it's more reliable.

Another way to put it is (the > indicates best choice, not what is slower or faster)
iBurst Support > Sentech Support
iBurst Stability (currently) < Sentech Stability (currently)
iBurst Stability (2 months after launch) > Sentech Stability (2 months after launch) - remember Sentech been around longer. I feel like saying give WBS time, but that might bite me later on
iBurst Speed (when it works) > Sentech Speed (when it works)
iBurst Speed (overall) < Sentech Speed (overall)
iBurst latency (when it works) > Sentech latency (when it works)
iBurst latency (overall) < Sentech latency (overall)
iBurst Cap (1G-9G hardcap depending on package) < Sentech Cap (10G-40G soft cap depending on package)

DF, which 1 do you use for GTR ?
I keep the Sentech at the office because it's more reliable. Occasionally I use it at home, but it's seldom. 100% of the time (so far) in GTR I am on iBurst (only been playing GTR for 2-3 weeks)

To answer some of the questions on MyWireless that have been posed:
There is a month by month option and the price IS R799 as stated for the 256kbps (now known as the Professional package). There is an activation fee for this of R144. You will also need to purchase a modem which retails at R3300 incl VAT.

As far as latency is concerned, ADSL WILL beat MyWireless or IBurst every time on this front due to the inherent properties of Wireless communication. So if you are going to be using wireless, this is something you will have to accept. However, latency varies from good to poor (70ms to 800ms but will tend to be around 170ms) and is dependent on distance from towers amongst other things.

Please note that I am writing as a reseller for MyWireless.

Living in middle of Bryanston & was using ISDN. Looked at ADSL, myWireless & iBurst.

- Although in the middle of Sandton, I couldn't get ADSL!
(to far from bryanston exchange)
- myWireless: Very poor signal strength (I got them out to test)
- Then tried iBurst for a week -- was perfect.

Being using it for a month now, every day -- no probems (yet..). Mainly use it for Skype (to Europe is fantastic), email and heavy browsing.

I would say try all 3 -- cost is similar -- but performance could be all over the place.

my 2c

i would go with iburst just the start up cost is high

also get a demo done so you can see the signal

Get more than a demo get it for the week you are allowed by wbs to test the service then make your own mind. The experience is two variable from person to person for anyone to give general advice. For me iburst is brilliant.

ya but you see its all got to do with signal if your signal is good it should always be good if the demo dude sits there and its 20% thats all it will be

for me its always excellent speed is great for a business its alot better than adsl in terms of time and money

I just cancelled my iBurst contract. It is useless. Many of the applications don't work due to port shapping (not just P2P). Also I having problems with timeouts, constant ip address changes etc etc etc ...

So I will strongly suggest looking at the other options but NOT iBurst!

I am considering ADSL or MyWireless now. I would have chosen MyWireless straight away if the installation cost was not so high and the standard contract was on month-to-month basis, rather than being R100 per month more expesive than the 24 month contract.

When you chosing what to get, consider what are the possibilities for price decrease in near future of the relevant products. I think iBurst and MyWireless will not get any cheaper any time soon, while ADSL will (especially the ISP cost as there is already competition there). I think if one does not need mobility and do have the money, ADSL will be the better choice ...
