Heya

I'm sitting with the Telkom/Marconi Premium combo router and my Netgear DG834. I want to use the premium combo purely to serve wireless and the netgear to do the DSL bit.

How can I get the two to work well together? I want the network to run using DHCP served either from the Netgear or the Marconi and any new client (wireless or otherwise) to be assigned an address, default gateway and given internet access via NAT.

I'm willing to try anything and would like to learn how to do all this as I've never really gotten into networking. So any suggestions would be cool :D

Configure the Netgear router with DSL settings, DHCP, NAT, etc. Then connect the LAN1 port on the Netgear to the LAN1 port on the wireless combo. Disable all the services (DHCP, DSL, etc) except the WAP on the wireless combo.

Not so much. I've configured the netgear to do everything and it does it fine (NAT, DHCP, DSL) and connected the Lan1 ports of both the netgear and the marconi.

If I have a wireless device connect, it grabs the network fine but gets no IP address (I assume cos DHCP is done via the Netgear). If I assign an IP address manually ipconfig shows it up as 0.0.0.0. Any clues? :D

switch dhcp and wireless off on the netgear. Connect the 2 routers together. DHCP must be on, on the telkom router. Make sure that the ip differs on the 2 routers.

Hopefully im not stating anything blaringly pbvious but here are a few pointers.

ADSL must go into the netgear
Netgear must be configured for everything you want including DHCP
Cable from Netgear to Marconi must not go into a port labeled "internet" or similiar - only a normal port
DHCP must be switched off on Marconi
Both routers must be on same ip range i.e. you can't have the marconi at 10.0.0.2 and the Netgear at 192.168.1.1 or whatever.

Hope that wasn't insultingly simple but often its just the basic settings that are wrong and not something more complicated

Quite right about the ip address point. The routers use a different IP range and subnet. You need to configure the marconi to be on the 192.168.0.x range with subnet 255.255.255.0, then connect to the netgear. ( i set the netgear ip to 192.168.0.254 and the marconi to 192.168.0.250. The DHCP from the netgear will allocate IPs to the calling machines. )

It's very hard to insult me :D Nah really, I said I was a networking n00b and I was being completely honest :) Fortunately I knew enough to make them the same range and subnet so that part was done easily.

Got everything running perfectly now with wireless clients using the right WEP being assigned DHCP addies and having access to the network and DSL. Absolutely spiffy. Now all I need to do is clean up all my cabling and such to make the place all neat and tidy.

Ta to everyone for the assists :D
