Sounds like someone stole your account details mate.. log onto your router and change the default user/pass (if not already done). If you PM me your IP address then I can see if I can get in..

Howzit! I spent my whole morning reading up on that... Would you be able to tell me how I can go about changing the IP address of my router please?

I'm considering a change of ISP's right now. Someone in another thread mentioned All You Can Eat?

And just when i was about to refrain from my usual "blame telkom", it was their fault all along.

Unlucky Y2K, but this is what you will have to get used to when it comes to Telkom- k@k service, k@k prices, k@k dsl...

on a lighter note allyoucaneat is a very popular isp and has nothing to do with telkom.

For 680 bucks a month you get 30gig international , which is a great price considering telkom's offerings but may be a bit more than you would require.

What are you going to be using the internet for? If it is just email and browsing then a 3 gig cap is more than enough.

Your IP address changes every 24 hours or so so unless you switch your modem off for a few hours you will have the same IP until next reset.

Get the manual and log into your router and change the default login details. Routers are accessible from the web, and someone doesn't necessarily have to know your IP address - they can input a range of IPs and use a ping and port scanner to see if port 80 is open.. which it almost always is as the routers have web-based admin interfaces.

If you change the default login you should be fine though..

A very neat little Internet Monitoring Tool...i think its freeware....This WILL tell you if stuff is going out or comming in without you noticing...Study/learn how it opperates for a while till you get the hang of it...;-)

We used to have a normal 56k account with Mweb, but it was horribly slow.

That prompted my mom to get an ADSL account. Not sure why my mom went with a 1024 one nor did I know there were any other line options available for ADSL till now. :(

In November & December last year we had the very same problem where our cap for the month would finish in 1-2 days. Which left us pretty confused as I'm usually at university & my mom doesn't know how to do anything else but check her emails.

When we spoke to Telkom about it we were just told to get two extra 3GB additional caps which we did. In January this year we decided to cancel the accounts since we hardly used them.

When we tried cancelling them, every month our account would show the additional caps as STILL being there. So on 31 March I decided to phone Telkom again. I ended up speaking to someone who told me that our ID number for the account was mixed up so the account therefore was not being cancelled.

At the moment I'm waiting to be credited on that. Well I hope to be.

Hello, Y2K

I had the same problem with telkom; when you phoned them asked to cancell your 3gig account because you are going to a better isp they said sure "ok"

but recently on their webside I tiked a block that said it must report details on how many cap usage I'm using monthly...

So I thought it was cancelled and went to axxess.co.za very good service there since I got 30gig cap for R370 a month when the prices wern't very high yet.

And I was still being billed R300 extra a month even thou I didn't use my 3gig account and the report keep coming to my e-mail still being billed and i still asked them to discharge the account so nothing happend until there line prices increased again an 3 cap usage per month increased so i cancelled my line then my ISP got cancelled aswell.

Is there a really big difference in speed between 512k connection and 1024?

Thanks! :)

A friend of mine has told me about a program called Hijack This, which apparently lets me see if anyone or malicious programs are installed on my PC. I'm going to give that a try. :)
Hjack this will find most broswer hacks and trojans.. but you need to know what your looking for.

Be careful what you delete or you could do more harm than good. There are many web sites that you can post your logs from hijack to so they can check for you, i'm sure most people here wouldn't mind either, You can even PM it to me if you or just post it here.

Or of course.. google! Check everything twice before you tell hijack this to remove anything

Wish you luck with your telkom account getting cancelled. I cancelled mine yesterday and wouldn't put down the phone until the lady had recieved confirmation that my account had been terminated (even to the extent that I loose this months cap even though I paid for it already) Now to see if they finally pay me back the R1k+ from incorrect charges over the last 3 months :(

So from what I gather you're saying my Telkom ADSL USB Pots modem is my router?
Yes, I'm saying your Telkom ADSL USB Pots modem is your router. Calling these boxes modems is something that brings out the pedant in me, they are basic routers with ADSL capability (but the marketing boys, didn't think that sounded sexy enough, hence ADSL modem :D ).

I do have this white "box" from Telkom along with a filter that connects to my phone line jack, I'm guessing thats NOT my router... :o
Nope, it's exactly what it says on the box ... a filter. :)

how fast is 1024k really from 512k any experiences?
1024k rarely runs as fast as it should and neither does 512k

384k lines are often know to have 512k or near-512k speeds, so my advice would be to get a 384k line.
