Hopefully someone can give me some clarity.

I'm looking to do a bachelor of computing science, however my matric results are not good enough to just jump straight into that. I contacted Unisa and was advised do to the following:

"You 1st need to complete Mathematics N4 and Engineering Science N4 with 50% and above at a FET College before you can apply for the HC; in Physical Sciences."

My problem right now is that I don't really know where to begin.

  • What exactly is engineering science, as all I can find is an N4 qualification in electrical engineering(heavy flow)/(light flow)
  • N4 Mathematics is rather straight forward, however I would like to know what level of math are we talking about here
  • Which college would be best attend. Keeping in mind that I work full time and that I will have to go the distance learning route

Any help would be very much appreciated

I went the N route. Doing N6 now. Engineering science is basically physical science without any chemistry. N4 level is just slightly more advanced than matric maths and science. What area are you from?

Hi Wesley. I live in Vryburg at the moment but possibly moving to Pretoria in a few months. Thanks for your feedback, I'm having trouble finding an institution that lists engineering science as a course. Would it be listed under a different name maybe?

Sorry, I only know the colleges in Durban. So basically it will be listed as either mechanical engineering n4 or electrical engineering n4. This will contain 4 subjects one of which will be engineering science. You must go to the college itself to find out about booking for single subjects

To be honest I had no idea the nated courses were still in play, did my mech eng some time ago.
How far do you need to go with it?

The engineering science is fun, might convert you yet

Well i only need to do the N4 but I was thinking if it's something that I find enjoyable that I'd go further with it.

Won't know until you try it. Get the n2 and n3 engineering science books too, it will help you get a grasp of stuff

Thank you for the advice. I'll definitely need as much background as I can get. Hopefully it won't cost me an arm and a leg

Doubt it, I did mine through a private college, and it cost 1500 per subject . The books are like r300

There are plenty of TVETs in Pretoria, it's not a standalone course, it's a subject within a course, you need to check subjects under N4. Where will you be based in Pretoria?

See the attached file and scroll down to Engineering.

Good day.

I'm in the exact same situation. Did you manage to get it sorted?

I've been doing my research, but it only confuses me more.
