Ok I've mentioned it a few times on some threads but has anyone else tried any of the great retexturing packs that are out there for N64 emulators? There is some really great work done by the modding scene. The original N64 games were plagued by horrible muddy textures because of the low amount of system ram, so these packs can totally rejuvenate the games.

Basically you have two schools of retexturists - those who try to keep as close to the original graphics but in hi-def/photorealistic, and those who change the graphics to a particular style. The most notable of the latter style of texturing is Djipi's Cel-Shaded Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It's still being worked on, but the first version has been completed and released. I think this is a real masterpiece:

this is a link to the most updated pack

Another great finished piece of work is Pietsche and Bad Randolph's Super Smash Bros pack just recently completed.

Also Gitech is constantly working on his mega Castlevania 2 project:

(this one is a 500mb download, be warned - I still don't have it)

Mollymutt's Mario 64 project is noteworthy, but there are a few M64 packs around with different styles.

Note it can be fiddly to make these things work. projects get picked up and dropped halfway through. I can help if you want to try one out.

or you can kick mario and play Crysis?..nah just kidding, just find it almost unbelievable that there are people willing to sit down and spend their time doing this...

Have you sat down and looked at top 100 game of all time lists recently? Zelda 64 is generally number 1 or 2, Mario 64 is top 10, Smash Bros is nearly always in there. These are some of the greatest games ever made. Crysis is just a run of the mill shooter apart from the graphics. But I play that as well, I just love the old N64 games. That was my era.

own a wii, with a nintendo 64 emulator on via homebrew know what your saying haha that was more a a tongue in cheek cherp at people thinking nintendo games require "better textures" to entertain.

busy downloady molly muts mario now...and hey never call crysis just another shooter...its well briliant in 9000 different ways haha

is there a way to extract n64 game textures, or perhaps even mame32 textures ?????

Actually I may have given the link to another Mario 64 texture pack but it's still great.

Keeper yes there is, if you have Mudlord's video plugin after 6.1.3 or Glide Napalm there is an option to dump textures to a file. That will extract everything you look at while playing. That is how they are able to do the retexturing.

Not sure about mame32.

I'm considering uploading some of these packs online for posterity...or when my HDD crashes again.

haha I remember the Pokemon special edition N64. That came out with Pokemon Stadium right? Those were the early days of Pokemon fever.

I realised I should provide some tutorial for those who actually want to play these things. Later I'll get on my own PC and upload some screenies.

1: Grab yourself a copy of 1964 or Project 64 (1.6 is available for free, 1.7 requires membership but you can find it on torrents if you want). I prefer 1964 in general but it's a matter of preference. Then grab the roms for whatever games you want. You should have a copy of the cartridge, since roms are only legal for backup purposes. www.dohgames.com is a good source of N64 roms.

2: Get hold of Napalm and Mudlord's plugins. http://www.n64redux.com/plugins Both of them have the option of playing hi-res textures. I prefer Mudlord's for usability but Napalms is more advanced and tends to load more accurately. Then inside the video plugin options there is a box for 'load hi-res textures', tick that.

3: Download a texture pack and inside the plugin folder within the emulator directory you will see a subfolder called 'hi res'. Load the textures into a folder within there and make sure the folder has the right name. For Zelda OoT it must be Legend of Zelda for instance. I'll upload a pic of my folder later.

Plug and play. if it works you will see the emulator loading the textures for a little while before the game itself begins. It goes without saying that you should have a controller - I use a logitech dual action, works great. If you have more difficulties just ask.

haha I remember the Pokemon special edition N64.

When you turn the system on and the Pikachu starts flashing those red cheeks, you realize that this is the height of geekdom right there! :D

Someone compiled a more or less complete texture pack of Zelda. It's about 200mb but it's a MUST. The GUI, the static backgrounds, every area of the game has been redone and it looks fantastic.
