N82 Cheapest Contract

I don't think you should go for the N82. It's not on the VC brochure anymore. You can still find the N81 though. I have a N82 and I'm not that happy with it. The camera is not that great and that was the only reason I got it over the 5800. The 5800 is cheaper by far for pretty much the same spec.

Why go for a contract phone at all? My last 4 phones have all been swops or cash purchases!

Just make sure you buy the phone from a reputable person/shop - don't want any problems when the original owner stops paying his account!

I don't see how buying the handset outright is better. I got the N82 just over a year ago on a MTN Procall 120 contract (R239/month). This gives me 120 free minutes a month and costs me R5736 over the life of the contract. At the time, MTN was selling the N82 for R7000, today it still retails for over R4500 (http://www.jump.co.za/product/nokia-n82-9451456.htm). Had I chosen to buy the phone outright, I would have paid R7000 on the spot and then had to buy airtime on top of that.

I just don't see the logic.

It depends where you buy the phone from. I also have 2 contracts, but I can't use a phone for more than 6 months. It makes sense to have a contract, but for guys like us, we swop/sell/buy used phones from reliable people. I always buy gadgets and phones but never brand new unless very cheap. You just have to be very careful, there's a lot of crooks out there.

got the N82 on a VC talk240 contractt for 430 bucks per month, gives me 240 minutes, added the extra 200 sms's and for thats about it :) i do like the phone though

What didn't you like about the camera? I'm also looking at a N82 - specifically because of the Xenon flash.

Mind you, any camera will be better than my E51's excuse for digitizing light in a pleasantly viewable and printable manner... :D

Sorry, forgot to add that like seedat77 I also have 2 contracts spaced a year apart - so every year I can upgrade (if I want to), and after 6 months or so swop the phones for something better... I continue paying my accounts, so the phone won't be barred or anything like that. I know VC/MTN CC doesn't like it / may even be against contract conditions, but...

I see on the various 2nd hand goods sites you can get a N82 for between R2000 & R2500...

The only way I know is via PC suite. It will install the newer version of software updater application 1st , then it will do your firmware upgrade.
Just make sure your firewall is not blocking the connections.

my latest version :Nokia N82(10.01) -> V 31.0.016 (did it about 3 weeks back or so)

Ahm got my n82 lyk 3months back very great phone indeed, its fast and when multitasking...it becomes Supaman. Camera is the dopest so far, iv tryd n95(camera is good, the phone speed isnt that impressing but i gues the firmware update solves that), n78(is good, camera is very good especialy in daylight), but i wouldnt recommend touch screen phones like 5800 and the camera sucks big time, but it is a great phone the big screen is killer. With touch screen phone the dopest iv tryd was iPHONE the screen sensitivity is Very Good, samsung i850 and Omnia(they ok, i dig the Finger mouse nav, just dont like), HTC(lol what do u people think bout the phone?). I got my n82 on mtn hvvp anytime100, i paid R2099 once off and R105 a month with R100airtime.

if i take my phone to my service provider will they be able to upgrade my firmware?

Media ya they can update it for, or u cn do it yourself just get your phone software, make sure your phone is fully charged, make sure you got strong or reliable internet connection. Its easy but you need to be very cautious. But just ask your SP
