N82 Replacement...

Quick question Lancelot, not sure how long you have had your N82 for, but about a month or two ago mine seemed to start reporting the battery capicity wrong.
I have times where it would say low battery, i would turn it off take the battery out and then it would be 3 or 2 bars left and stay there. I have had it sit on saying Low Battery for nearly a whole day once. Just wondering if its happened to you also.

Nope, I have experience no problems. The most I have is the odd little ding on the outside from many a drop but no actual issues with the phone.

You write that camera is your most important consideration so in that regard I can try and offer my input.

In all honesty, the camera 'kings' in cellphones are among the following: Nokia, SE and Samsung. HTC are woeful in that area.

The Galaxy S is decent but not great which is rather surprising that it is a Samsung. Not that Samsung are great overall but they compete quite well in camera stakes. You'll find that most great camera phones are 8mp and upwards.

The Vivaz from SE is the current king of 8mp camphones. I'm not a fan of S60 but this is the best 8mp camphone followed by the Omnia HD. I believe the Motorola Droid X will probably be the best 8mp camphone when it is released.

I'm curious to know why some feel that the X10 is a 'poor' attempt at Android. Its two major caveats are the old OS version and the much hyped Multi-touch. The OS is to be upgraded this quarter while we are waiting to know if it will get Froyo. I highly doubt that the current phones are going to get Gingerbread.

Do any of those have Xenon flashes? And I am also not big on pure pixel count. I trust when you are referring to camera quality you are referring to the image it produces? The Carl Zeiss lens truly is a marvel on the N82.

Trust me, I don't buy into this 'more pixels mean better quality'. I have a Nikon D200 and I know what excellent picture quality is.

Unfortunately, those two phones don't have xenon flashes but I can tell you that you will not find a better camphone quality than the Vivaz currently.

You will, sadly, not find too many phones with a xenon flash. I can only think of the Sony Ericsson C905, Satio. Those are 8 to 12mp. On the 5mp sector you are looking at the Motorola ZN5 which is quite good as well.

I do think the N8 will be a super camphone when released, it will be better than the Satio IMO. So, for xenon flash equipped phones you pretty limited to the above and I would therefore go for the Satio as an overall excellent snapper.

So, my contract is up for renewal in two months and I am at a loss to find any phone to replace my excellent N82! So I'm looking to the masses for some input.

Now let me mention a couple of things...

1. The camera is the most appealing thing on the N82 for me. Not the megapixels, 5MP, as a lot of phones offer this but the actual picture quality as a result of the Carl Zeiss lens and the Xenon flash. This is the part I am finding the most difficulty matching on any current phone. Can any phone even come close?

2. I use Garmin XT on my N82 and I like it. I know many other phones have other GPS software, as does Nokia with their Nokia Maps, but I prefer Garmin. Does this limit me to Nokia and Symbian or do other phones have it?

3. I am looking at getting a Vodacom contract as I need to use my cellphone for work a lot more now so will probably go for a package that includes a couple of hundred free minutes. Some of the blackberry packages appeal to me but the phones themselves have nothing on the N82.

4. I am not interested in an iPhone but feel free to convince me otherwise, as I know this will be a suggestion. But please make it a substantiated argument and not just cos it is pretty and cool.

Help me find a phone better than my two year old phone! Thanks :)

Samsung galaxy S (but no flash as far as I know)
is it gonna turn into the same discussion as 2 years ago?
:-)
glad you still enjoying you N82....i am also due for an upgrade, my Omnia got stolen at the 2010 concert.

I have an N79, which is worth little more than a packet of chips and coke at the moment (but performs brilliantly). Since I am a nokia slut, I'm prepared to wait for the N8... and should that fail, HTC Desire and/or some form of crackberry

Gota love how people talk down the X10 just because it runs 1.6 lol.
ANYWAY, the N8 is your best bet here, have no idea why the Desire is even getting a mention with that mediocre camera it has.
The N8 will suit your needs comfortably, it supports S60v5 software to, and the latest Ovi Maps will be preinstalled, which i have found to work flawlessly in my 5800. You will LOVE Nokia Messaging Email app as it's unbelievablely frugal, yet supports Push Email and HTML view as you mentioned you will use the phone for work i assume you will need such a facility. To end it off, the N8 has THEE most powerful camera ever put in a mobile. It's a 12mp Carl Zeiss with wide angle lens, Xenon flash and the largest sensor ever to be put in a mobile, the graphics processor in it has been proven to be more powerful than what's found in the Apple iPad and iPhone4, overall the N8 seems to be a success in the making, maybe not apps-wise, but I see another N95 moment.

I hope they fixed the dodgy back cover :P

The N8 is not going to have a back cover.... Nokia are so confident of resolving issues with hanging phones which require removal of the battery that the N8 will have a solid aluminium casing which cannot be opened without a screw driver, so no dodgy back cover on this baby ;)

It is looking like I may need to wait for the N8....

If they manage to cock up the N8... im going to become a mac fanboy...

LMAO! Nope, no more dodgy back covers. :D Ye, if Nokia screw up the N8 that really will be something, as spec wise its almost bulletproof.

Nah lol, if your N8 hangs all you do is hold the power button down for 8seconds, this will cut off the power and reboot it. :)

The replacement for the N82 is the N8 - they are imaging kings!

I moved from my N82 to a N97 and then to a 5800. I was contemplating the X6 but will hold on for the N8. If you liked the N82 then you will not go wrong with a N8.
A cheaper alternative is the N79 - my wife moved from N82 to N79 and she loves it.

I'm thinking of the SE Vivaz as a replacement but the Vivaz just does not feel right.

Well moving from my Nokia N82 to the Samsung Galaxy S went well.
But i miss that flash so bad :(.
But i do not miss how slow the phone was in all aspects. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy S that is.
