I ran dns benchmarking software called namebench to determine if changing my dns addresses would speed internet access up. It recommended this

and overall I get 15.3% improvement.

Does this mean that south african dns servers are corrupt?

Also, I see that many forumites have advised 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (google dns), but its slow according to the graph it generated

No, those sites make use of CDN and caching servers to deliver content so they will have different IP addresses depending on where you are accessing them from.

Hmm, okay, when I see the word 'hijacked' and 'appears incorrect' I get nervous

To quote their FAQ:-

What does "NXDOMAIN hijacking" mean?

It means that the DNS server falsifies the result when a non-existent host is requested. This is usually used so that the DNS provider can place advertising when you make a typo when typing in a URL.
What does "Incorrect result for..." mean?

This means that the DNS server may be falsifying the result for a well known service, and redirecting you to another website. This is usually a very bad thing. This alert may also result in false positives when a website changes to a new network or CNAME.
