NAS device

Indeed. That's what makes the HP MicroServer a good option cost wise, and flexible in your choices of OS to boot.

Thanks guys, will definitely stay away from the Seagate. Guy at work recommended QNap or Dlink, but i hate dlink (bad experience with routers)....

Will look at DBG (uniterm) and see what they have. 4K is pricey though but that DS411J is exactly what I want... Might have to just stick it out with the proliant.

The other make you can look at is Thecus (www.thecus.com) they have some good devices...havent used it for long periods before, but have trialed one and seemed pretty snappy.

EDIT: Gonna leave the idea of NAS - new box, with 5 bays should do for now.

HP Microserver is perfect for that!

For example:
HP Proliant MicroServer N40L - R1395
Intel Pro/1000 CT Pci-Express x1 Desktop Gigabit Adapter - R315
Lockable IcyDock Single Drive Bay - R261
Kingston USB 2.0 8GB Flash-Drive - R69
Kingston 4GB DDR3-1333 RAM x2 - R 478

1) Instal RAM, NIC and IcyDock Bay
2) Update BIOS
3) Disable the onboard NIC in the Server BIOS (it doesn't perform well, IE. more than 30MB/s, in any OS other than Windows).
4) Install FreeNAS

That will give you a 5bay NAS that will outperform most of these "purpose built" NAS that cost up to around R10k and the FreeNAS Web-GUI is so easy and simple to use I can't think why anyone would buy these "purpose built" units instead...

All for the price of: R 2518

If you can get one of the cheaper Microservers you can get one for even cheaper (I paid R700 for my Microserver).

Total speeds you can except will depend on the drives you use but I did a quick test and with 3xWD20EARS drives I got 100MB/s write and 115MB/s read on Samba (normal Windows shares).

Bargain for the price!

Geez. Glad I ran into this thread. Looking at options for storage (movies, mp3's, general media) Didn't realize that NAS boxes are so pricey! That and the cost of getting a drive or two, make for scary exercise.

Besides NAS storage - What solution can be employed? A server chassis?

EDIT: Gonna leave the idea of NAS - new box, with 5 bays should do for now.

HP micro server running UNRAID.
