NAS Device

How about Amahi? It's perfect for home use.

"What makes Amahi a contender amongst the software similar to FreeNAS is that it caters to a specific crowd and if a decent home server is all that you want, then this might just be the right choice for you. The prime benefit is that all your data will be backed up to a central computer and from there, it can be conveniently shared to other devices. What’s more, if your main PC happens to fail, your files can be restored back again. You’ll also be able to securely access your content from almost anywhere with this software, that’s provided you set up a VPN. Well, these aren’t all – the developer has thrown in a host of shared applications which can be used to manage things around the house and even keep track of your family."

Thanks guys
All your recommendations are software
I am looking for a hardware solution
I don't want another pc in the house!

Well a NAS is essentially a computer. If price isn't an issue then get something like a Synology otherwise build yourself a mini-PC which will work out cheaper in most cases.

Also depends on how much storage you need, how much space you need?

Very happy with my Synology Diskstation SDJ110j (i'm sure newer models are out now)

Its a single drive NAS device, higher end ones can run RAID and handle bigger groups

Have one at work and one a the office, its nearly 2 years and hasslefree. Also use the home one to stream movies/series to my xbox360. I fitted a 2tb hardrive (regular 3.5" sata stuff" - 2 pc's and a laptop backup to it daily.

It has 2 USB ports too, one is used to backup the entire NAS drive to an external USB now and then.

In the past i used Seagates Goflex (terrible), and an Iomega piece of crap too.
