Hi guys,

I am looking for a NAS enclosure. Preferable, it should be able to accommodate 3-4 SATA drives, and be able to do RAID 1/5. Also needs to have 1gbps connection as I am going to be storing HD movies on it (5-10GB a pop). Do you guys have any specific suggestions for models that can easily be found in SA?

Cheers,
Michael

I'm actually also looking for the same thing. No ideas at the moment though.

hhhm, yeah, I was looking at the ReadyNAS NV+

has anybody had any experience with such devices?

My **** that's expensive. Better to just build a spare pc up instead.

Good luck finding something that has decent transfer rates! :(

I like the spare pc idea best!

yeah... damn, 6k for just an empty box + another 1.8k for each 1.5TB HDD :( that just doesn't look pretty :(

Recently bought one of these for the same use.. and all can recommend is building you own from pc componets..

They Processors in these things are not up to the take of stream media content... the minute 2 ppl start using it they start failing.. I have the Dlink one...

Get yourself a low power ATOM based motherboard and build a NAS from that.

Would also recommend FreeNAS.

For R6000, as per the above listed NAS, you could get a DECENT quad core PC

there are only 2 issues with this: using a small ATOM mobo limits your storage expansion and RAID capabilities (AFAIK, most of the ATOM boards don't support this stuff) leaving you with buying a RAID card...

secondly, enclosures are pricey, and a nice hot swappable 4 drive enclosure with a backplane will set you back 1k alone :( and it will never look as nice as the NAS box...

So then use an htpc case or a shuttle case.

where is the nas server gonna stand anyway? hidden away i bet!

anyway, there are some good looking cases out there. Extra PC will be much better - use the extra dough for more HDD's !

Amazes me how concerned people are with looks.

I would use software RAID anyway.
