The D201GLY2 has found a brand new home in Cape Town and it is all because me got the commell lv-678 motherboard, I am running an e8500 on that board right now. Dual Gigabit lan, and so much more.

The board is just under R3k, but well worth and will last for yonks as the basis of your NAS and is good for a number of CPU upgrade cycles.
 
was just wondering if it wasn't coping... cause i need a nice quiet nas solution..
It has to reside in my bedroom..
 
@Greggpb, it wasn't coping for what I required.

I have it streaming media to my ps3 and xbox via twonkymedia , downloading as a torrentbox and also backing up data from my other pc's on the network.

so I was overloading it a bit, also it only had 2 sata , whereas the lv-678 has 6 sata and native support for raid. Which is awesome for me.
 
gonna run freenas off my board and an 80gb hdd tonight and see how it runs.
 
Freenas bombed issues with the board - it's not compatible with some of the bits, or so it appears to me. Windows XP also had issues BSOD, whilst installing.

Ubuntu ran straight from the livecd, the first time.

Eventually after a recommendation, I attempted to test my system with a 180day trial version of Windows Server 2008 and reading up on how to configure it as a workstation.

It installed in 15-20 mins on my system - so i am delighted to have it motoring again.
 
Guys, Can we get a list of some nice and decent Micro and mini-atx boards or even dedicated nas boards for us to build small nas servers with. Im look at building one.

What about the Intel Atom motherboards like the Intel 945GCLF Little Falls or similar. Then maybe get a add-on pci sata raid controller.

Or like the above mentioned motherboards with 6-8sata ports, but damn they are expensive.. I know a mini san system is not cheap either..

So anyone have any boards to recommend.. Also, are they available locally?
 
Well, the next intel mobo to look out for that is a mini-itx form factor type unit, that supports the normal desktop cpu's is DG45FC. These should be available locally, it should not be much longer. I found that the atom based little falls struggles at times.

Ideally I would want to get a lot of interested parties together, so we can place a mass order for a range of these ES34069 Chenbro cases.

I mean there is so many folks on here wanting to start their own HTPC or Home NAS projects, I think we can round up enugh folks to place an order to have these babies imported.
 
Nope, rectron no longer supply those from what I can find out, will follow up again later this morning.
 
Damn, well there goes that idea.. One other case i was looking at was the Lian-Li PC-A06, but its not the same as the Chenbro cases. Also, the Commell LV-678 supplied by Systems 104 goes for around R3000 a board... DAMN...
 
Yes, it's 3k a pop for the board, but you got to love it.

I use it along with an e8500 cpu, 15-20 ins install time for windows server 2008.

the chenbro gets my vote, because of the removable racks.

I consider this board as longer term item, it won't be sold off anytime soon, to finance a new upgrade craving.

this board is destined to become legendary.
 
Yup, long term it should be a good investment, also it being a industrial build motherboard, should last you long time! :) Glad i cept my UPS laying around, UPS is to small for my 1KW psu in my gaming system but should run just fine with the NAS server. Just need to get a serial cable to manage the little bugger..

Im considering getting one now. Still looking for a decent case also. Them i have to ramp up 4x 500GB drives or maybe even 4x 1TB. But apparently 500GB drives perform better than TB drives. And i only need that much space for now.. Until prices drop on the bigger drives i will consider upgrading to bigger ones later for now.
 
In terms of drives R/gig ratio - It seems the seagate 1.5TB's are a whole lot better in terms of R/gig than some of the lower spaced drives - it's like R1.33 per gig R2006.00 at Sybaritic. So there is your benefit, it costs less to in real terms for me.

I have my 6 x 1.5 TB's on pre-order coming at the end of the month.
 
oh yes, and with 6 of those babies, this board supports natively RAID 0,1,5
 
mmnn yea i see the 1.5TB are cheaper per GB. mmnn..

What OS are you going to run on that baby? M$ or other?
 
Ubuntu worked out of the box, but most of the other os's gave me crap.

But am currently running Windows Server 2008, busy configuring it as a workstation.
 
im looking for something more stable than M$. lol looking at OpenFiler for one option.. But i havent decided yet. Maybe if i need to i might think of M$ if things doenst work out.. lol
 
I downloaded all the alternative os's for using it as a NAS :

Openfiler
Clarkconnect
Ubuntu
Freenas

I am very scared about data loss, althought I don't know why.

I just nuked all my drives that I sold off, without a care for backing them up, save for a few files.

Thing is most of the other software I have is m$ based.

Twonkymedia server , love using it. Serves to everything and anything - my x360, ps3 can play all the shared media. I am able to pause fwd and rwd - unlike other programs that convert on the fly.
