Hope this makes sense.

I have external HDD that I use to play on the DVD machine via USB. I now want to connect this external HDD to some gadget that will enable me to acess this HDD on the Network wirelessly - while at the same time enable me to still use the HDD as an external HDD with USB through the DVD.

I did find this

It sort of does what I want but I would have to keep on disconnecting the device and plug back into the DVD - I want something where I dont have to do that.

IS this possible - any suggestions greatly appreciated.

TIA.

Does your DVD player have an ethernet port? If so I would get a NAS, chuck the HDD in there and stream to the DVD. What other equipment do you have? PS3? What wireless router? Etc. And how much are you willing to spend?

Nope, its an el'cheapo DVD player no ethernet.
I just basically have wireless router that connects 1 PC (cable) 3 notebooks and xbox via wireless. Xbox cannot be used for this purpose, just the external HDD and DVD.

I actually didnt know you get DVD's with ethernet (can you recommend some brands) - maybe that is my solution. I dont mind spending some money to get the solution I want - R2K to 3K would be fine.

Thanks

I don.t know the Xbox that well, but you should be able to stream to the TV via the Xbox provided the Xbox has ethernet port or wireless. So connect the HDD to the laptop. Get a good media server program from the web (PS3 Media Server will do the trick even for Xbox) and stream.I have a similar setup - NAS server -> wireless router -> PS3 -> TV. I dont walk around with HDD's anymore

why dont you just get a wd live and external dvd player? can even get a usb port extender for more hdds/usbs

thanks for the inputs - looks like I will need to go the way of these kinds of media players. I was hoping to use what I already have but so be it.
