Do here is the deal. I have little or rather i have no space remaining out of all my drives. I currently have 1tb in total and they hold everything from my F1 collection to music and documents. Now i need more space(obivously). So i decided to get me. NAS secondhand... Until i discouvered! No where to be found, and new ones cost an arm and half a bum! Any ideas ladies and gentle brothers? My last resort is to get my cousin to bring me one from UK, but i like to support the locals.

Apparently those things are weak when more than 2 users get onto them and demand data from them... Thus pushing to bottom of my list.

You can build a NAS using a desktop (or Microserver) and NAS4Free and spec the hardware according to your needs. Otherwise, Qnap NAS devices are pretty good and start at about R1.5 k ex vat for a single disk NAS enclosure.

That is still costly. Judging from the current exchange rate, I can get one for about R1.5k and it will come with about 3/4 TB of space. Still big bargain and looks good too....

No, microservers are great. I have a bunch of them being used as a nas all over the place.

I find that hard to believe, are you sure its not just the enclosure that has that capacity minus drives?

Those are mostly (if not all I'm not sure) 2nd hand. Have a look here if you want to buy from the UK. They have some 2 bay link models for @R1k not including disks.

A NAS (my favorites are Synology and QNAP) will be expensive. Once you go 4-5 bays the base model will cost about 4K and then the sky is the limit (depending on the HDDs you fit).

I think i am going to get the freecom silver store 2. Basically has space for 2 drives, 1 network connection, 1 usb3, 1 usb2. Comes to a lil over 1k. Brand spankin....new

put the money towards a bigger case, and a better mobo or a SAS card.
(or just buy a 3-bay-to-4-HDD device, which costs like R150 if you don't want a new case)

I got a gigabyte mobo with 8 SATA ports for R1299 incl vat.

Let me stop being an arse and check out the hp micro servers for myself. Any good places that deliver with a good price?

While being sensible, check out Synology too. I am very happy with mine albeit one with a small processor, it does everything I need and I have yet to experience any lags or problems with speed. Uniterm Direct sells these and recently had specials on micro servers

Lovely they seem... Wait i think I forgot to mention one important constraint, I am a student which automatically means im always... ALWAYS! broke. I have a very tight budget for this. And man once it starts to jump over 1500 means im back to just bread and peanut butter for a while, and I thought i left that life last year man.

Let me see if I cannot locate something of this sort in UK. Everything seems a tad cheaper there, plus I got free transportation to this side.
